T C / Hydraulic Rebuilding

Postby LeoM » Mon May 25, 2015 12:59 pm

I am new to rebuilding Cubs and I am about embark on overhauling the TC on 3 of my tractors. I have read many responses to hydraulic related posts and hope that you will provide some guidance as I go forward. First is a standard 1952 Cub with a Woods belly mower. The second is a 1958 LoBoy with a Wagner 45 Loader. Third is a 1948 Super A with a Woods finish mower. The '52 has no response to the lift control and I cannot feel any fluid in the reservoir. The '58 Loboy had the bypass connection to the loader control block capped off and the '48 Super A rear lift does not respond (front raises and lowers OK). Additionally I have a 1966 Standard Cub that I found a reasonably priced IH 1000 loader that I plan to install. The IH 1000 is completely disassembled and will be a complete restoration. I am quite sure I will need help along the way. I have a fairly good understanding of hydraulics but I am not familiar with tractors. My previous experience is on large steam and combustion turbine hydraulic control systems.
I have located a good supplier for hydraulic hoses, Universal Hose and Fittings in Farmville, Va., ie 3/8" X 24" 2 wire 3,000 psi hose for $9.85. I have a rebuilt Cub hydraulic pump for the Loboy and a new bypass block for the IH 1000. My most immediate need is "O" rings and seals for the TC's, IH 1000 Control Block and cylinders and the same for the Wagner 45. Also any source for rebuilding instructions. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Leo

There is a LOT of information if you click on BOARD INDEX above, then go down to the HOW TO FORUM. There you can find help on just about any component of the Cub.

Here is the link to the Hydraulic pump: http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=44196
And TM Tactor (a forum sponsor) has a rebuild kit for it: http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/288fp.htm

And here's a great one for the TC Block:
http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=42857

I also bought the Kit for the TC Block rebuild from TM Tractor...there are two different ones depending on the part number on your block:
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/044fp.htm
or http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/627fp.htm

It is not difficult, but take your time...take LOTS of photos, keep everything VERY clean, and try not to allow too much time to pass while doing it...best to do it in one day, so you don't loose track of how to put it back together!!

Good luck!

Oh, and here is a kit from Steiner's for the Super A:
http://www.steinertractor.com/IHS3020Hydraulic-Touch-Control-Block-Gasket-and-O-Ring-Kit

And I came across this YouTube video for the Super A...didn't watch the whole thing, but it might have some good pointers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dax3nsbc77s There is a part 2 as well.

One last thing, from the links above, under RUDI'S MANUALS, you will find this link to the Touch Control Blue Ribbon Service Manual. It is for both the Cub and the SA...the same basic operations, just more parts in the SA!
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Blue%20Ribbon%20Service%20Manuals/GSS-1024%20Touch%20Control/index.html
I printed out the Blue Ribbon Manual and the HOW TO for the block...it is good to have them at hand.

Leo, If you go to the parts list for the 1000 loader, it gives the o-ring sizes.

Hi,
For the 1952 Cub, or any of them that are low on fluid, fill the fluid up to the filler plug. It won't work if it's low on fluid. There might be nothing wrong with the one low on fluid, or it might be leaking the fluid out of the pump seal into the engine oil pan. Then you would need a new pump seal.
If it is low, and you fill it, the air needs to be removed. Below is a page from the Cub owner's manual telling how to get the air out of it. Be sure to do what paragraph 4 says.
After filling the system, if it works right, use the tractor for some time, check the engine oil often, and see if it rises on the dipstick, and if it goes down in the Touch Control, the pump seal is leaking, unless there is a leak you can see on the outside of the unit.
Click on the pic makes it bigger. :)

Here are a couple of useful manual links:

This is a pdf of my copy of the Blue Ribbon service manual, GSS1411. I prefer the pdf as I bookmarked the entire manual for easy navigation and set it up for keyword searching, which can be handy. (any manuals in the PDF manuals with "OCR" (Optical character recognition) in the title are searchable. http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/download.php?fname=./files/Service%20Manuals/Blue%20Ribbon%20Service%20Manuals/GSS-1411%20W-Rev%201%20Cub%20and%20Lo-Boy%202-76%20OCR.pdf

Here is the loader manual: http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/download.php?fname=./files/Cub%20Attachments/Loader/International%201000%20Loader%20Operator%27s%20Manual.pdf

Glen probably is right, low on hydraulic fluid. Change it out with HyTran or something similar filling right up to the plug and bleed the system. Leave the filler plug out and throttle up the tractor and move the hydraulic lever back and forth maybe 10 times. Worked for me.
