The OEM FCub magneto is a J4 (6v positive ground). I reread your posts and could not determine if your tractor has the original magneto ignition system, been converted to a battery/distributor type or maybe the coil has been changed to an external coil (posting a picture would help determine that). The parts manual at the top of the page will give you the complete breakdown with IH part numbers and pictures/schematics for anything you need. Note the C60 engine is listed seperately in the later revision manuals. There is also good pictures of the distributor ignition systems in the 154 Numbered Series LoBoy Owners manuals. Good Luck and enjoy your piece of family history. Stan

If you have not done it yet, download a few manuals which are available in pdf form.

The parts manual for all the Cubs is an essential. This one is bookmarked for easy navigation and set up for keyword searching

The Service Manual is another essential. Ditto on the bookmarking
http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/index.php

Also, one that should never be overlooked is the Owner's Manual. This is extremely helpful. In plain talk it takes you through all the things you need to service on a regular basis. Lots of different lube points that all should be serviced in a tractor that has sit for so many years. Here is a 1949 manual, but note that you can and should use modern lubricants.

Can someone tell me what size screw is used to secure the J-4 magneto gear cover in place?

I can tell you where to find the answer. Download a parts manual and use the bookmarks to find the magneto and the diagram to find the part. Look up the listing by number in the list and the parts breakdown includes a list of fasteners required to secure the part. Occasionally, you will just get a part number for the fastener if it is a special IH fastener, like a head or flywheel bolt.

I am beginning to dig into this task and keep running into problems, although they may be minor and sound stupid, that I seem to have created a long time ago. It appears that I was attempting to check the points when I stopped about 40 years ago and had removed the screws in the pinion gear cover before stopping. I have better material now and realize that that was unnecessary, but I had done it anyway. With the cover in hand I notice a depression that will be over the pinion gear and looks like there is some residual grease in that depression. Should I put some grease in the depression or pack the gear? The schematic of the magneto shows a felt cover, but I do not see anything that looks like it is felt nor do I see the gasket (it appears to have been a metal-to-metal seal when I removed the cover). Online I do not see the felt listed on the parts for sale

The first 6 pages of the BLUE RIBBON SERVICE MANUAL 1012, Electrical Equipment gives detailed instructions on servicing the magneto. http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/index.p ... es/Service Manuals/Blue Ribbon Service Manuals&order=0

I have the manual, but I do not see anything about the rotor button and pinion gear lubrication. The schematic also shows what appears to be afelt washer that goes with the rotor button. Am I misreading the schematic?

This mixture of ATF/Acetone seemed to work as advertised, and I have gotten to the point that I am ready to try to start my cub. When I pulled the starter the first time the engine would not turn over, so I figured that I needed to turn the engine a little with the hand crank and when I tried that the hand crank slips off the crankshaft. I was able to move the pistons a little before it would slip off and that was enough to allow the starter to turn the engine and blow out the ATF/Acetone mixture that I used before trying to crank.

Do you have and idea what to do for the crank slipping off crankshaft?

Do you know if you have the correct crank? If the pin is too small or too short, it will not stay in the pulley slot well.

Does the pin stick out evenly on both sides? It could have one half broken/worn...?

I am not 100% sure it is the correct crank since at one time I had 2, but can only find the one that I had left in the cub. It sticks out the same on both sides. It seems to ride up and off of the crankshaft. I will measure the pin. How long is it supposed to be.

Reading down through this thread, I've not seen any mention of priming the oil pump. If this Cub has not been started in 40 years, priming the oil pump is the 1st order of business.

Is it possible that your engine is stiff or almost locked up due to sitting for so long? That and a rounded off crank could be why you're having difficulties cranking it over.

Prime the oil pump, make sure it has a good battery, fresh gas and no obstructions in the air intake. It should at least turn over via the starter. If you get that far, then you can start checking for adequate spark, etc.

Hope this helps.
