1957 Cub with issues charging the battery

Postby FarmallCubby1949 » Sun Jun 14, 2015 10:50 am

I have a nice 1957 Cub that I bought about 2 weeks ago. It runs great as long as the battery is charged. My issure is the battery which is 6 volt that I just bought brand new after I bought the tractor isn't staying charged. The Cub has a generator with a regulator on it, also has a distibutor with a coil. I seen the manual on here for 1957 which states the Cub is positive ground. If you hook the battery up the way it's supposed to be it shows a discharge on the gauge, but it you hook it up the other way it shows a charge. From looking at the system it looks to be original to me, but other guys are telling me it could of been upgraded to 12 volt. Based on information I provided could anyone shed some light on this situation. I'm afraid to hook a 12 volt battery to it unless I know for sure what I'm dealing with. I have the 6 volt charging now. Also sorry for being away for a while, I have been busy with work and family.

Hi,
I've have a 1956 Cub for years, so I have seen what they look like. When you turn the ignition on, before starting, the ammeter should move towards discharge slightly. Then when it is running, the needle should move towards charge some. I can't tell from your writing if that is what it is doing.
If it is reading the opposite way, the ammeter is probably hooked up backwards. If it is backwards, you need to take off the hood, and change the 2 wires on the ammeter to the opposite terminals.
The 6 volt system is positive ground.
Also, does it have the original type generator and voltage regulator, I guess you said it doesn't have an alternator.
Here is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing the original system. Click on the pic makes it bigger. :)

Thanks Glen. I work in the afternoon so in the morning I'm going to hook up the battery that I have charging and it should start. I'm going to run it and pay close attention to the gauge and see it it goes from discharge to charge like you said, which makes sense to me. The other thing you said about it being wired backwards is a possibility for sure. The page you sent from the manual is a huge help to me because the setup in that diagram is exactly like the one on my Cub, which from that my system looks to be orignal. If this runs my battery down again them my generator and regulator must have gone bad in which case I'll get a rebuild kit for the generator and buy a new regulator. :thanx:

Here is a flow chart for trouble shooting the system:
