dumb mud daubers!!!!

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Mon Jun 22, 2015 8:45 pm

Once I bought a couple of 18 volt impacts about 4 years ago my compressor does not get used near as much as it used to, but I do use it to blow the grass off my mower deck before I bring the tractor inside to park it. Today was the 3rd time this summer I have opened the drain valve which has a hose going to the outside, and about a half second to a second after opening it I hear a POW, and the air and water starts flowing. The drain line is 3/8 I.D. clear tubing, and is so soft and slick the mud plug cannot hold. Doubt the dauber survived if he was in there at the time, it is only about 4 feet from my scrap iron rack. LOL

I have seen cubs with the attachment bolt holes filled with corks. I assumed it was to prevent just this situation on the Cub. I see no reason you couldn't use it on your pressure washer.

Often the nests will be built on the fan blades of seldom-used engines. What a noise and dust when the nest breaks loose after the engine is started.

I left out the fact it was air compressor, not pressure washer. I briefly open the drain to get water our of tank every time I use it.

I bought two of those fake hornets nests and hung them up last years. Seemed to work well at keeping both mud daubers and paper wasps out of the shed and off the front porch (they build behind the shutters).

This year was a different story. They apparently had an off-season wasp conference and passed a resolution to discount the "hornet" nest. Have found several in the shed, with the most comical located INSIDE the fake hornet's nest!!!

It's back to using the fly swatter... 8)

My compressor drain pipe exhausts outside, so it is not surprising out there. However, I have had a fake hornet nest at each end of my shed for 3 or 4 years, and this is the first time I have had them come any further than the door frames, but his year they are everywhere and in more numbers than usual. Not just in shop, but every where, garage, vehicles, etc.

Thought this was a funny post, especially since it has definitely been a bumper crop this year for mud daubers!!

When I recently did some work on my SA, I was generally looking it over, checking fluids, etc. Decided to check the vent hole on the steering gear housing, and found it looked plugged up. Upon further investigation, I found this...

The scourge of country living, they find their way into every nook and cranny that you dont want them to. As kids we used to pick them off surfaces when we found them and throw them at each other, kinda the same way that we used to use persimmons. It was all fun until someone threw a green one.

I know, we used them as Frisbees. Im not one to brag, but I think I could throw one better than an Olympic diskus thrower.
