just need advice

Postby ub54 » Thu Jun 25, 2015 10:08 am

About a year ago I was mowing and stopped for a drink. The old cub wouldn't start when I was ready. I ended up running the battery down . Anyway the next day after charging the battery I got it running. Problem was I had to throttle it all the way down or it wouldn't fire. After starting it at low idle I worked it up to mowing speed and finished mowing. From that day on I had to start it at idle. So last fall I retimed the mag and reset the points and after that it started at any speed . Well it did it again. So I went all through it again and it started right up but just once . Now I'm back to low idle starting . What's causing this ? It's driving me nuts . Any advice is helpful. thanx in advance

Sounds to me like the fuel/air mixture when the engine is hot is starting to vaporize the fuel and making it too lean there by causing a hard to start after you have been running for a while.

I think you might need to slightly enrichen the idle mixture abit to enrichen for the hot starts....

Just a thought

I thought that too at first but I have to start it at idle when it's the first start of the day. At first I thought it had jumped time, thus there-timing of the mag and points . See lastfall when I did that it started easy at any speed . Then out of the blue it's back to idle starts , and that aint easy, got to catch it just right

I have been having this same trouble with my 59 Lo-Boy. In this hot weather after mowing for an hour or two when we shut it off it has to sit an hour or it won't start. And it has to be started at idle also.

I really don't know what's happening but you didn't mention the plugs...it could be as simple as the plugs need changed. I'm going to suggest your coil may be going bad. A weak spark doesn't fire well in a rich (throttle up) mixture.

I would say it's more involved than hard. You'll need to remove the mag and tear it down far enough on a bench to disconnect the coil wire. There are breakdowns listed in Rudi's Manuals listed above. You've been able to time it so your good to go there. Here's a good post about testing spark, worth the read, viewtopic.php?f=140&t=39890 and trouble shooting ignitions viewtopic.php?f=140&t=80344

Hope that helps - good luck :coffee:

Do not purchase parts until the problem area(s) (is)/are determined.

Suggest 100% engine tune up,including cleaning the air cleaner.

Conduct a systematic, diagnostic test program to determine the problem(s).
I have an excuse. CRS.
