just bought another one , but its stuck
I bought another cub the other day, got it fairly cheap ( I hope ) . Anyway its been sitting a couple years and now the motor is stuck. Seller said it ran before sitting . Question, how likely is it that it will need to be bored out , or is there an alternative . I don't have it home yet but I'm sure I can handle the repairs it needs .

Re: just bought another one , but its stuck
I've resurrected a few stuck engines, on cubs. None needed boring, so far! Rings are sometimes stuck in the piston grooves. I like to think that the tighter the bore, the more likely it is to stick. (Probably not true, but it's an excuse to buy it!)

Would I need to pull the pistons to loosen them if their stuck or would a good soaking of the cylinders with marvel do the trick ?

It could be a little carbon or rust may have one piston stuck. I had one like that last year. Take the starter off and use a pry bar wedged in the flywheel teeth and see if the engine will turn backwards at all and let us know.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

You will not know until you at least get it un stuck and do a compression test. If it was running when parked it could be full of water now and pitted real bad. Good luck hope it breaks loose easy.

I would wonder what "a couple years" means. If it hasn't been sitting too long, I would expect the best. Maybe not, but its better than it sitting 20+ years.
I like Ed's idea ... maybe it means a tighter bore!!

Re: just bought another one , but its stuck
Do not overlook the possibility of the starter being jammed into the flywheel ring gear. To check that try loosening the starter bolts a round or two and see if that allows the engine to turn. Also try turning engine backwards. If it will turn part of a round backward then part of a round forward it is probably a stuck valve. If it has been under a roof or the exhaust covered it probably will not take much to free it. If it has been setting outside with the exhaust uncovered, remove the plugs and see if a cylinder is full of water. In that case, good luck.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I usually pull the spark plugs, and put a generous amount of penetration oil, into each cylinder. Let it sit a few days, then try the ideas mentioned above. I had one free up easily, that way. (Also had to use a hydraulic press, on a couple)

Let it soak in penetrating oil for a few days and see what happens. You don't have anything to loose.

If you can't get it to move after trying the above suggestions, the next step for me is to remove the pan and head, then remove each rod cap and try to move the pistons up, one at a time. After they are all up to the top, you should be able to turn the crankshaft by handcrank. If not, be ready to remove the engine and pull the crankshaft. It's a lot of work but sometimes necessary to get everything moving.
