With the original magneto, right? I would be demanding my money back on the supposedly rebuilt magneto.

I bought a nonworking magneto for parts and rebuilt it myself. The coil, points and condensor were the only parts that had to be replaced. There is a similar post a few lines down on this page. The poster has the same problem I have, and apparently his was not resolved either. Amazing something so simple as a magneto can cause such problems. I guess I will re-install the external coil and leave it at that.

I am bumping this post so that maybe....just maybe it will help someone having the same issues. I found my problem to be the points. Brand new points, apparently have to be tweaked so that the point surfaces mate correctly. After looking at the points under a lighted magnifying glass, it was apparent that they were only touching each other on one corner. I had to bend the adjustable section by bending it in two directions with a pair of pliers. After that, I redressed them with the points file, and reinstalled the mag. Fired right up and purred like a tiger.

Glad you found the issue. I have had some difficulty with the points not being ground or manufactured in a way that would give a good contact, and some are too wide to fit into the grooved landing for them. Anyone replacing points should take some time to insure they fit correctly, and dressing them with a file is always a good idea.

Thanks again for your help Rick!
I would dare add that a magneto is more "finicky" about this than an external coil is. My tractor has run as smooth as anything since ive had it. Bump the starter no matter the weather and it fires right off without the choke, even at 10 Degrees F. Since I put on this magneto, it wouldn't run right for all the money in the world until i corrected the points issue. Have replaced points twice before with the external coil without doing anything other than gapping, and never had any issues.

Glad to hear you discovered the issue. We may think that the points not lining up is too big of a deal, but that's where the business is going on, so it's a pretty big deal for the mag. Will try to remember this post next time I change/check points.

Thanks! :coffee:
