180 out of time?
Got the Cub ready for its first test today . But first I've installed new coil in the mag , new plugs and wires , new points condenser and rotor plus cap, changed oil and filter and cleaned the carb. Plus I just re-checked the mag timing . My newest question is , is it possible that my timing could be 180 degrees off / When I spun it over I got nothing then a couple of loud backfires . I have good spark and really expected it to fire right up. Any ideas for this old man.? I'm really close to having it done ....or maybe not

That sounds like the case. It's real easy to get it out 180. There is an easy way to check. Move the number one plug wire to the number four tower and the rest of the wires in the firing order of 3,4,2. If it runs it's 180 out. Then you can remove the mag and get it in correct.

Re: 180 out of time?
If you bring #1 cylinder up on compression and align the timing marks, pull the distributor cap, the rotor should be setting at the 1 o'clock position. If its at the 8 o'clock position, it's 180 out.

An additional thought. Spark plug wires on wrong spark plug.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 180 out of time?
Before I tried it I checked the timing marks, aligned the mark to the needle . Then like an idiot pulled the mag away from the motor till it clicked and zapped ,myself . But when I was done it was all good. Bugs are too bad to be out there now but I'll report back first thing in the morn. While I'm thinking about it , what's the difference in timing if there is only one mark on the pulley ? My other Cub has 2

Re: 180 out of time?
Did you align the mark with the needle on the compression stroke? One mark on the pulley is TDC mark. Other mark on a pulley is BTDC, used when checking advance.

Re: 180 out of time?
Yeah it was on compression, you know sin ce I've thought about it the rotor was just a bit before 12:00 til I rotated the mag away from the engine and when it zapped me it was just to 1:00 . I'll re-check the alignment on the pinion in the morning . But as I said mosquitoes are horrific here. I'm not going back out tonite.

Re: 180 out of time?
In addition to what Thomas said, cubs originally equipped with a magneto came with pulley with single mark, and the ones equipped with distributor had the pulleys with 2 marks, so far as I know.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
