cub won't start
Hi - I have a "53 farmall cub. Everything has been working great but now when I pull the starter, nothing happens. I've clicked the part where the puller engages the small lever on the engine and a couple of times this worked. Does anyone know if I need a new starter, or just the part where the starter lever attaches? The battery is new. Thanks!

First step is to make sure ALL the electrical connections (both positive and negative), including the contact surfaces inside the starter switch are clean. If your starter was working OK it is unlikely that it suddenly went bad.

Re: cub won't start
Thanks - I'll do that. Here's a bit more information that I'd like to clear up. What is the chrome (in my case) device that sits on top of the starter (where the negative battery cable attaches)? It's 2-3 inches long and has a lever where the long starter rod attaches and this activates a plunger. Is it possible that this is the problem? When I pull the starter there is no sound at all. The meter shows a full charge. Thank you!

Re: cub won't start
That chrome thing is the switch for the starter.
Battery condition, fully charged. Multimeter - voltage drop test? New battery doesn't tell you about the battery charge or condition.
Check the voltage at the battery cable terminal on top of the starter.
Conduct the checks I listed. Report back.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: cub won't start
In addition to what you have already been told, try to turn the engine by hand. If it will not turn at all, the starter may be jammed against the flywheel ring gear teeth. To solve that problem loosen the 2 mounting bolts for the starter and try turning the engine.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Just so you know, and however unlikely , the starter quit on my truck out of the blue yesterday and I was so sure it was good I bought a new battery I didn't need . Just saying .

The "plunger" you described bridges between the cable terminal contact and the starter terminal contact, all inside the switch. The only way to check it is to take it apart and clean/file the contact surfaces as needed. Replacement switch is not very expensive.

Re: cub won't start
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the info. The problem may be simpler than I had thought. A hot barn plus a negligent owner equals a dried out battery. I'm not sure why I had some stop-and-go starts (which led me to suspect the starter) but maybe the battery was on the verge of holding a charge. I filled it (it took a lot) but won't recharge. I'll buy a new one next week and if that doesn't solve the starting problem, I'll do what you have suggested. Stay tuned......

Re: cub won't start
FWIW - I have noticed that the battery needs checked and refilled regularly on my Cub, being 6 volt and even on low charge (with the cutout not a regulator).

Thanks to all - it turned out to be the battery after all!
