Red Kote help

Postby RandyPenn88 » Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:53 am

I have a question about using Red Kote for my Cub tank.. I can get it locally but it is only sold by the quart. My tank being almost 8 gals, how many quarts should I get to seal it with?

I've not actually used it but I think one quart would be overkill, and you could probably do 10 Cub tanks with one quart. I'm sure others will speak up, but since you're just coating the inside of the tank, the surface area is really not that large compared to the surface area that could be covered by a quart of paint.

The container will tell you how many gallons of tank it will line. I'm doubtful that it comes in less than a quart.

Follow the directions on the can, for cleaning, so the Redkote sticks properly, and allow plenty of drying time, before refilling. First tank of fuel, may be pink, but that isn't a problem.

The link below is for the Red -kote instructions. It says that for tanks less than 12 Gal use 1 quart.

You will have Red Kote left over, takes less than a quart for the Cub's gas tank. Drain excess back into the original container. You will have enough left over material to coat a small engine fuel tank.

Have used Red Kote on several fuel tanks. Biggest suggestion is to let the Red Kote fully dry, set in sun for several days, before installing fuel. Sniff test, if you smell the material, Red Kote, it's not dry.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Red Kote along with other sealants are not friendly to your pulmonary respiratory system .. ask me. I would suggest that you take the tank to your local gas tank/radiator repair shop and have them do it professionally. Not only will they clean the tank in an acid bath, they should check for pin holes and seal them up. For the price it is a far better value than having to lug O2 Tanks around ... ... like I said .. ask me!

Thank you gentlemen for all the info! I filled the tank with apple cider vinegar and let it sit over the weekend, drained and cleaned it out last night: jeesh what a mess, I think 7 gallons of rust came out! Dried it with a heat gun and 100 degree heat from the sun today, vacuumed out a few left over specs of rust and now am off to pour in the RedKote. Update to follow later this week.
