My local Auto Zone has compression tester they loan out with a deposit of $43.80 which you get back when you return the item.

Re: Cub Won't Start...most likely cause???
I just checked my local AutoZone and they do have a compression tester available for loan just like Mike said, so I think I'll be going by and getting that first chance I get.
Getting back to a couple of other suggestions...I took a look at the points and they look new...no pitting and are nice and shiny. The rotor button was looking a little green so I tried to carefully remove some of that corrosion with 220 grit, but now I'm wondering if I've messed it up because when I put it back together I couldn't get it to start. Could I have filed it down enough for it not to be making contact with the contacts in the cap? I'm going to attempt to attach a photo. Also, talking about spark plugs, I've been using Champion D18Y's, which I take to be a medium heat plug. I'll also attempt to attach a picture of one I've removed...I don't see any soot or excessive buildup though it does seem discolored. The Cub is normally run for about an hour and a half at a time while cutting grass with a Woods L59 belly mower. And, yes, I agree all the heat and humidity does make for some pretty amazing crabgrass this time of year, so it's a workout. Does a D21 seem more appropriate? So, I've got a new rotor button on order ($13.33!!!) and will pop that in hopefully this weekend and maybe that will turn out to be the reason I can't get it going at the moment.

NAPA carries the rotor. The store at 208 W 8th St Metropolis, IL shows it in stock for $9.29.

indy61: Good to know...I didn't consider them and went straight to an IH dealer. I'll keep NAPA in mind next time.

Indy61: For future reference, how did you find this part? In my Cub parts manual the rotor button is item 2 on the exploded view and the part number is 71 908 C1. How do you get from that to NAPA's part number IH300?

71908-C1 is for the Prestolite distributor.
353896R91 is for the IH distributor.
I entered 353896R91 in the search box and selected Interchange.

Check the inside of the distributor cap. The terminals will probably be corroded up.
Edit: Also check for cracks and carbon tracking.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Indy61: Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I think I was one page off in the manual and must have been looking at the wrong distributor. I'm still learning my way around the parts manual, but with your help I see NAPA also has the cap if I need it.

Re: Cub Won't Start...most likely cause???
Hi,
If you sanded the rotor, and it looks like in your picture, it should work better than it did before.
I would use finer sandpaper though. The outer end of the rotor doesn't contact anything, it just passes close to the distributor cap contacts. The spark there should jump 1/4 inch or more. So you haven't hurt it. There is some other reason the engine won't run.
You could try cleaning it up more, the center contact on the rotor is dirty. Clean in the cap too, if those contacts are dirty.
After you clean them, if there's no spark, the coil or condenser might have quit, or there could be a wiring problem, or the ignition switch could have quit. Many possibilities.
Turn on the switch and check with a voltmeter and see if you are getting battery power at the coil, is a place to begin.

Re: Cub Won't Start...most likely cause???
Glen: It was weird...I sanded the rotor and put it back together and then it wouldn't start. I didn't think I'd messed up the rotor, but am going to replace it just to be sure. I've got a new wire set, so will probably put those on when I get a chance to get back to it in a few days. I'm going to check out the cap...I bet it's corroded as well. Thanks for your suggestions.
