Leaking Gas Cap

Postby PVF1799 » Tue Aug 18, 2015 7:10 am

I've got one of the New Gas Caps on Rex '48. Although new it still leaks when gas splashes around in the tank. Is there a cure? I thought of trying to bend the inside tangs down a bit so it's tighter.

Your Thoughts, Ken

Probably needs the neck reworked with the neck tool.

Ken - take a look at the sealing surface of the tank neck. If it is not smooth and flat it will not seal. The tool Ed mentioned will re-shape the tank neck to flatten the surface so the gasket on the cap will seal. Bending the tangs will not help.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Not filling the tank completely full will also help.

Still a rookie question and no laughing - ED. What the heck is a Neck Resurfacing tool and where does one get one?

I will check the neck - no I cleaned it very well during the restoration.

The original tool was produced by IH for the dealers to straighten damaged filler openings. Earl has made copies of the tool. Several members have them and one is usually be available for use at Cubfests. Here is an old thread with a picture of one in use:

Ken, I doubled up the gasket on mine and it doesn't leak any more.... I cut one out from rubberized cork gasket material.

You can also buy the gaskets from your local dealer or from TM Tractor for around $3 to $5.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
