Sediment Bowl cleaning

Postby DanielV2 » Fri Aug 21, 2015 12:18 pm

I am working on getting the hood back on my '49 and am cleaning the sediment bowl. I have the valve off of the bowl and am getting it cleaned up and was thinking that the packing needed to be replaced. In searching the forum, I found a comment that the older valves did not have any packing. When I loosen the packing nut, there is a plastic washer behind it. I then unscrew the valve as much as I can but it won't unscrew out of the body of the valve. It appears that the shaft seals, brass to brass, on the body when open. Could this valve not require packing? If it does, what should I use and how to I "pack" it into the valve. Thanks for the help!

Is your valve an original IH or aftermarket? The original valve has an "L" shaped handle and can be unscrewed and removed from the valve body, you have to unscrew the valve handle in conjunction with the packing nut. Waxed dental floss can be used for packing, about 5 or 6 wraps and snug the nut up to the point it does not leak. and yes, it does seat brass to brass in the full open and full closed position. I've seen posts that an o-ring can be used but it has never worked for me. Hope this helps. Stan

The valve is original IH, L shaped. I can unscrew the valve untill it stops. I then unscrew the packing nut and the shaft will unscrew a little more but won't come out. When I get on it with a wrench, I feel like I am going to break something.

I have never had one that would not unscrew completely but there is always the first time. Might be a burr or something lodged between the two sealing lobes on the shaft.

Most likely the old packing is binding on the inside of the "tube" as you screw the valve out. Can you get the nut off enough to where you can dig some of the old packing out with a dental pick or similar? DO NOT try to straighten the L handle to take the nut off. (Unless you want to buy a new sediment bowl.) A cat may have nine lives but that handle only has one bend, and it's already been used.

I have 2 sediment bowls apart right now. One from a '49 and one from a '60. I can't unscrew the shaft out of either one of them. I unscrew the shaft and the second sealing lobe from the end seats in the "tube" and will go no farther. I got on the "tube" hard with a wrench and the shaft began turning with the "tube". I gave up on getting the shaft out and decided to put the valve back in the bowl assembly and see how it would work. When putting it back in, I stripped the first thread out of the bowl assembly. I think I may have expanded the "tube" when trying to unscrew the shaft and now the threads don't line up. Does anyone know what the thread size is? The threads measure at 22/in but I don't know the size. I was thinking to chase the threads just in case it was causing the mis-alignment. I may have to break down and purchase another assembly.

Not sure about the "handle" side but the outlet side where the fuel line connects is 1/2 x 20, nf bolt threads, same as the IH carb inlet.
