Need help with charging voltage

Postby Mossberg835 » Sat Aug 29, 2015 7:41 pm

I just bought a 1941 farmall A today, i checked the charging voltage. Its a 6 volt system but it was charging 11.6 volts. I know thats way to high. Is there any way to lower it? I could not find the generator on mine tho, the only thing on the belt isbthe fan, water pump, and the mag. And information would be much appreciated

Something is amiss!! In this case, charging voltage is only produced by a generator or an alternator. Pictures? Do you have a battery/distributor starting or magneto? Maybe post your question on the FARMALL A forum.

It might be helpful to positively ID your tractor. The pictures are from the FARMALL A and B PARTS MANUAL TC-26F. I have an original of this manual if you need any info you can PM or post another question. Click on the picture makes it larger.

Is the 11.6 volts taken from a multimeter or the gauge installed in the dash?
I have an excuse. CRS.

I do not think the mag would be on a belt. Are you sure it is not the generator?

Hi,
I have only seen an A newer than that, but the generator was on the left side of the engine, run by the belt.
The magneto should be where it is in the pics above my post, on the right side of the engine, mounted to the engine, with wires coming out of the cap, going to the spark plugs.
The generator probably has a cutout, or relay IH called it, if it is the original system. You had to adjust the charging rate yourself with the 4 position switch on the dash. There is low or high charge. All the way counter clockwise is low charge. If it is set to high charge, the second position, it will charge at it's full output.
Set the switch to low charge, and see what your voltage reading is.
The 3rd position of the switch is dim lights, and the 4th is bright lights. It probably tells about it in the owner's manual.
Something could be wired wrong so you are getting that much voltage, or your relay could be bad and need replacing. I can't tell without being there. Maybe one of the A experts will write. :)
