Hi ya'll,
My 6 volt starter on my '51 Cub works fine, but I have to really pull the starter rod hard before it will turn over. I suspect it is the brass/copper contact bolt (rectangular shaped) that is on the top of the starter when the starter is installed on the tractor. The bolt head is pretty worn from the starter switch hitting it over and over the many years its been on there, I suspect. Probably not a new question to the forum. I THINK that I have found a replacement bolt on eBay, but want to make sure before I buy it. Here's a link to the eBay sale: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331418394962?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
Can any of you smart guys out there confirm if that is the part I need? And if it is, how hard is it to install?
Thanks!
Jim

Re: 6 volt starter question
Don't know the answer to your question but I had the local starter/gen/alternator shop to convert mine when they checked the brushes and cleaned the armature.

Re: 6 volt starter question
If you have a Dremel use one of the little drum sanding wheels to aggressively go over the stud and moving contact. It will amaze you what a difference it makes.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: 6 volt starter question
Hi,
Besides the post needing cleaning, or replacing, the switch contacts may be burned too, and the switch needs replacing.
The post is soldered inside the starter to 1 or 2 bars that fit in the slot in the bottom of the post, if it's like my Cub's starter. Probably need a shop to replace that if you don't work on starters.

Re: 6 volt starter question
Replacing the stud requires soldering inside the starter. The stud is bolted through an insulating washer in the case of the starter, then the windings are soldered to it.
I've resoldered the lug on a Super C starter once, and it wasn't too bad but if you don't have the soldering equipment you might want to leave it to the pros.

Re: 6 volt starter question
Thanks everyone for the advice on the starter. I believe I'll let it go for now (don't fix it if it ain't broke!). When it stops working, I'll take it to a starter guy.
Thanks, Dave, you too. A/2-39 Inf., 9th ID, 1968-1969. Too many other units to mention, spanning 27 years...the RVN one is the one that counts...

Re: 6 volt starter question
I've got the same issue with mine. I cleaned the contact a few times when I was first turning mine over a bit after having the starter rebuilt at the local shop. Kept having problems and finally figured out the contact had a divet burned into it so deep the switch contact can hardly hit it. I've filed mine down a bit smoother and it's a little better but I gave up using the starting rod and just run the switch by hand. I asked my local shop guy and he said it was soldered in and he wasn't aware of any replacement for it. From the looks of the eBay item you could pick up the same parts, copper stud, neoprene washers, etc, in what I like to call the "MacGuyver Aisle" at a good hardware store (my favorite section LOL). I'm hoping to lay hands on another starter soon and depending on which one is in better shape I'm going to rip one down and try to replace the contact and rebuild it myself.
