Pto problem

Postby Matt16 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 8:08 am

New to the forum. Have really got a lot of great info by just reading through some of the posts so I decided to join. Last year I purchased my first cub a 1957 Lo-boy with a woods belly mower and it mowed great all of last year. This year has been another story though. Mowed great for the first part of the year until I run into a problem with the pto popping out and making a grinding noise. I removed the pto shaft and found that the shifter was pretty worn. I rebuilt the shifter pin as some have suggested on this sight. It mowed good for a couple weeks and now I have the same grinding problem again. I inspected the shafts and noticed that a had about a half inch gap between the transmission shaft and the pto shaft. I split the cub at the transmission and fixed that problem. Only to have the pto start grinding again yesterday after about 5 or 6 passes. All the splines look good. this problem is starting to become a bit of a pain. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look next as far as a fix. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem...when I removed the PTO shaft again, I disassembled it to find I had the old style shaft with the STAKED bearing rather than the newer one with a retaining clip. The stakes had worn down allowing the bearing to migrate forward just a "tad", but enough to let the shaft pull back, wearing the new shift lever pin right down again.

I restaked the bearing and so far, so good.

Mine has the retaining clips as far as I know of. I didn't see any pins holding the bearings in.

The bearings aren't pinned. Here 's photo showing both for comparison...

Is seal retainer at front of transmission in proper position,if not the shaft will move back and forth.Just a thought.
