sickle mower blue

Postby brewzalot » Sun Sep 06, 2015 8:52 pm

I have been searching the forum threads for a source for a good blue sickle mower paint ...most of what I'm finding is older threads. Some of what was suggested 5-6 years ago is no longer available.
Does anyone have a good source or preference for what's available today? Although not everyone's choice, I am ok with rattle cans. I would like to match the original color the best I can without losing sleep over it.

I did try one suggestion for Krylon regal blue, but it seemed way too purple to me.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Ace Hardware International blue. Love it. I use the rattle cans, but it does come in quarts also

Thanks for the quick response- I picked some up this morning. Not many Ace stores left in my area.

Due to demand.....I've started to stock it @Johnson Tractor in Juda, WI. There are a number of people who still seek out this color.

We're getting more and more Ace stores all the time.

A word of warning on the Ace International Red rattle cans. The color comes out more of a flat maroon than a gloss red. IH Red in quart cans is a completely different color, and a reasonable gloss IH red. I discovered this last spring when I painted up a plow.

I still think the closest to NOS parts I have is the Van Sickle implement blue paint, also marketed as Ag Specialties in rattle cans. We compared them all side by side. It is a little hard to find.

Well now we know where they are all going...

I tried Van Sickles website, I couldn't find it but then I have trouble finding a lot of things on a computer. I will try searching Ag Specialties for a source, but the sample I sprayed of the Ace looks good to me.

Thanks for the comments.

For the blue, I prefer the Ace paint.

For the red, I prefer the VanSickle paint.

I've tried different manufacturers of both colors.

You couldn't find http://www.vansicklepaint.com or you couldn't find the blue on their website?

Got to the website and click on the paint can in the middle "Best Quality Alkyd Enamel"
Then right above the red "Product Features" banner is a "Click Here for Custom Colors" link. Click that.
You can click on International Harvester and pull it up. Personally I like to click on the first item "Show all colors" and scroll down through them. If I hadn't I would have never came across my all time favorite paint color name (CML-3053 it's the third one under Miscellaneous) I'm going to paint something that color someday! :{_}:

You may want to use a "hardener" with that one!
