Brakes Lining

Postby Greg 27 » Fri Sep 11, 2015 12:46 am

Hi I'm new to the forum and had a question on brake lining for a 1951 Cub. The serial number on my Cub is 144076. I just purchased the tractor after I loss my Allis Charmers G to my wife to do some row cropping with it. The brakes sound like they need some major attention so I went to You Tube and watched a gentleman relining his brake shoes. At the end of the video he said the the lining was purchased at Mc Master Carr. He also directed me to this this forum. I took a look at Mc Master Carr and they have low friction, medium friction and high friction in different thickness in sheet form also metal free and high strength in different thickness in strips. Which one do I need to purchase to do the brakes on my Cub. I have done the lining on the bands in the transmission on my 1926 model T roadster and still around to talk about it. Any information would be very helpful and thank you.

Welcome to the forum from Arkansas. Bob McCarty is a knowledgeable person on brake linings but he is tied up with his Rocky Mountain CubFest. Check out the link provided by skwimjim above.
Or you can enter brake linings in the search area. Good luck and enjoy your project.

I should add that the brake lining material I got from McMaster-Carr was fairly rigid and brittle. I cut the linings to length with a hacksaw, then chucked them into a pan of boiling water for about five minutes to soften them up. After they were soft, I carefully formed them into circles small enough to fit into the brake bands. I clamped the linings in place with a bunch of spring clamps, then let them fully dry before I drilled the holes for my rivets. I wasn't sure if the material expands when wet and didn't want all of my holes to be off once they were dry.

Hi thank you for the information it was very helpful. Just got my brakes lining and rivets from Mc Master Carr today and will start on the brakes tomorrow. One thing the number for the lining material part number has changed from 6224K117 to 6224K343. The price has changed from 5.39 a foot to 5.53 a foot also, the price has changed on the rivets from 9.91 to 11.69. This still is the cheapest way to do the brakes and a person feels petty proud when they are done.

Thank You

Greg
