Newbe with a leaky rear axle

Postby Elipman » Sun Oct 04, 2015 8:53 am

I just got my first farmall cub. From its serial number I've deduced it from 1953... I haven't driven it too much because I want to make sure the fluids are all appropriate and I see that it is leaking a liquid from the rear axle. Not a lot but a leak none the less. What is the first thing I can do to get the cub ready for a long life under my ownership... Btw I'm very new to all this (about the only thing mechanical I've done is changed the carbs on an old Honda motorcycle)

More than likely the trans may be over full. This happens when moister gets into the trans housing. The lube will start to leak out the axle seals. Remove the top of the trans and take a look (it will probably look like a nasty chocolate shake). Drain the trans and put in 3 1/2 pints of fuel oil and drive it about five minutes to flush it. Then drain that and add 3 1/2 pints of 90w lube. Your leak should stop when the lube is at the right level.

Welcome

Agree will Bill. Most likely over filled transmission.

Top of page, manuals. Free down load. The first manual to download and read is the Operator's Manual for your tractor year or closest to your tractor year. The Operator's Manual has lubrication points and much more information on your tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Welcome, Elipman - you're in for a lot of fun tinkering with your Cub.

Be prepared to catch a LOT of liquid when you drain the trans. When I drained mine I expected to get a quart or so of fluid. What I got seemed to be over a gallon of Quik/Yoo-Hoo/Brownie/Ovaltine/Egg Cream depending on your region of the country. Completely overwhelmed the basin I was using to collect the fluid. Oh, and it comes roaring out too...

Wow that was gross, the liquid in my transmision was odd looking to say the least. The first half was clear like water almost, then it got darker and soon is was a viscous muck. So now I'm supposed to fill it was fuel oil and run it but what is fuel oil? And after I drain the "fuel oil" what exactly should I fill it with? (I live in Ohio and plan to use it to plow snow in the winter)

Fuel oil is diesel fuel. Just add 3 1/2 pints and drive it for about 5 minutes. Then drain that and refill with 3 1/2 pints of 80/90 gear oil. Come on down to Cincy area this weekend for the CubFest.

There is a level plug on the left side of the transmission. You can use it to check for over fill. Fuel oil = heating oil or diesel. You could also use kerosene or mineral spirits (varsol).

So I filled the transmision with diesel and now when I tried to start it it wouldn't start. I did put on a new 6 volt battery and connected negative to negative and positive to positive. Why won't it turn over? the fan starts to spin but then there is a grinding ish sound coming from somewhere

Unless its been messed with 6V should be positive to ground and negative to wire going to starter solenoid. Would the grinding noise be the starter drive? Can you start/ turn over with hand crank?
