Farmall Paint Colors???

Postby Rothgardens » Tue Oct 27, 2015 1:18 pm

I'm looking to paint my 1955 lo boy cub this winter, but finding the price of paint a little crazy! One spray can $5.59 tractor supply/ $7.58 Yesterdays tractor/ $9.95 Stevens tractor company.com! Rust O Lum $2.80!!! Is there a close enough colors from Rust O Lum, I need Red, Silver and White. It is not a show tractor, but still want it to look descent! I'm in no way a painter, so spray cans are the way for me! Anybody have any info that would be great!

I have a 53 Cub that is 100% rustoleum. I used quart cans, compressor, and spray gun. It's hard to spray (for me anyway), lay it on heavy with no runs. That tractor shines better than my SA useng IH paint. It will fade if you leave it outside. Mine rarely see the sun, and still look great. Painted about 5 years ago.

You're right, paint is expensive, however, painting the tractor is the easy part. Preparing, degreasing, cleaning, sanding, cleaning, priming, cleaning, etc., is a TON of effort. After all of that work, I went for the best paint I could get so I'd never have to do it again. Honestly, you get what you pay for. If you're going to take the time to prep the tractor, do all of the degreasing and cleaning, I'd get the Case/IH Iron Guard paint and pay the price. It will last a lot longer and be well worth the money after all of the hard work.

This tractor, the hood and sheet metal was painted by a professional using Case IH Iron Guard in a gallon and a professional sprayer. All of the cast iron, engine, torque tube, rear end, wheels, etc., was painted by me using Case IH Iron Guard in spray cans. Other than the shine on the hood, you can't tell the difference.

Also, I cannot say enough good things about the Case IH Iron Guard gray primer. Even my painter who did the hood was amazed at what a good job that primer did. Painting is truly a 2 part system, regardless of what paint you use. If you're going with Rustoleum, then use their primer, if you go with Iron Guard, use that primer. The results will really show.

I painted my wheel weights using the Rust-O-Leum 'Regal Red' and they look pretty nice. But I second the opinion above that if you put all the effort into cleaning and prepping, you may regret not going all the way with the proper color.

My '55 Cub is a working tractor and I wanted a durable yet nice paint finish when I repainted. I started by listening to a local fellow who restores old tractors and autos. Here's what I did: Took off whatever would come off easily (hood, grille, etc.) then with sandpaper and elbow grease sanded off the old paint as best as I could while giving the metal and old paint a good "tooth" for new painting. I followed that with two heavy coats of Rustoleum's primer for rusted metal even though what I was painting had no or little rust on it. A bit of touch up sanding between coats and on the final coat knocked down brush marks. For the red, I bought a gallon of IH red from the dealer. It was the real deal paint not a 2-part product. Two coats of that. My intention was to #1 protect the metal from rust and #2 have a nice tractor for working. After some 5 or probably 8+ years of use (haying, snow plowing, general farm use including hauling logs and firewood) the paint has lost it's high gloss but is still nice. I might sand the red in a few years, pay for a new gallon of IH red and add two coats again. All of this was brush work. I think I used an inexpensive bristle brush for the undercoating of Rustoleum primer, but probably a foam Jen brush for a finer finish on the red. Step back a few feet and you cannot tell if it was brush work or sprayed.

If i was not using the tractor as much i would go for the good paint, but i plowing and using the hell out of it. Got with kids climbing on it playing and driving it into god only know what! I don't want to spend ton on it especially if i will need several touch ups!

I use all mine, now are trailer queens and I use the best I can find and then it wears better and holds up to the repeated abuse it takes. I used Epoxy on one and really like it but yes it is rather expensive. Other than that I have used CASE IH 2150 Red for most other stuff. I mix and spray it all myself and the tractor I painted 15 yrs ago needs to be redone as I have rather abused it. The one with Epoxy, well all I do is steam clean it and I am back to show room shine. You do what you want I just telling my experience.

Good luck with it, I'm sure things will turn out well.

I have had good luck (I think) using Wal-Mart self etching primer followed by Farm & Fleet Valspar rattle can IH Red! One I painted 10 years ago still looks decent and it has been used!!!! Run all the parts I can thru the electrolysis tank followed by degreaser and/or sanding for final prep. Dusty B

So anyone have a guess on how much paint to plan on for a 66 cub lowboy I don't need to be exact I'm good with left over for next tractor but want a semi reasonable guess at how much primer, white, and yellow to get.
At work we use a two part epoxy paint called devran made by devoe it's pricey but they use it in what amounts to a mix between a salt plant and concrete plant considering trying that out depending on price.
