What mower do I have? Woods??

Postby pdwatts » Tue Nov 10, 2015 4:17 pm

I am having trouble locating what type of Mower I have on my 77' IH Cub. It is a Woods mower from what I can tell but when I look up the information on it and look for diagrams, I cannot locate the correct parts. I am looking for what is referred too. I think" as the drive catch. All the ones I see on line in manuals are different.

I have been unable to upload a picture as it tells me my file is too large even on my cameras lowest setting. The part has a neck on it that is keyed from the inside and is about 2 1/2" long.

If anyone knows these mowers I can email a picture and maybe you can help me identify?

The issue issue is when I engage the PTO it makes a loud popping sound and appears to be slipping at this part.

Any help is much appreciated.....

Hi,
Here is a page with manuals, the Woods manuals are near the bottom of the page. I don't know if you have looked at the ones on this page. :)

Looks like the little Woods 42 with over-running clutch.---it would be single spindle and the clutches in them will fail if they are not greased often enough!
I have taken several of them off the cubs that I bought just to get the tractors, and most of the clutches were stuck or broke! thanks; sonny

Looks like a Danco IH mower to me. And if I'm not mistaken, the clutch is supposed to be lightly oiled, not greased

Thanks for the responses. The blades are turning but the spindle pops. Could the clutches be sticking? Maybe I should rebuild? Really didn't want to put too much into the mower but will if it will fix it.

I will take a look at the manuals linked also

:Dito: Use grease on the spindle bearings, only needs a light oil film on the clutch surfaces. Grease on the clutch assembly will actually cause it to stick and not work properly.

Which way are you turning it when it "pops"? If you turn the pulley on the spindle by hand (I had better add with the tractor not running for the safety police :) ) counterclockwise, looking down on it with the PTO disengaged; it should pop. It should not pop when you turn it clockwise, until you abruptly stop the pulley then the spindle and blades should continue to spin for a little bit. I would describe it as a ratcheting sound. That is normal operation to keep the mowers momentum from driving the rear wheels through the PTO.

It pops when you start up the mower until the blades get up to speed and then will do it again when you are mowing at times. Is this normal?

Just a note because I was curious as well when cleaning mine. I used a PTFE dry lube to try and avoid gumming everything up again, but think I'll use something heavier to quiet down the ratcheting when winding down. Per operators manual for the C-2, grease the clutch with a short fibre grease or medium wheel bearing grease once a week. Also says disassemble and clean it twice a season for inspection of pins and springs and addition of new grease.

Interesting...the Woods manual says use oil on overrunning clutch and the IH manual says use grease. They are both of the same basic design. Only IH C-2 mower I've owned, the clutch would not operate. I was convinced it was gummed up with old grease, but am not certain of that. It found a home elsewhere before I could take the time to check it out

Is it just a single pop, repeated pops, rhythmic pops, uneven pops, some louder than others? Not trying to be difficult but "pops" just isn't much to go on when you can't see it or hear it. Thinking maybe blades hitting deck, or deck flexing, or ..............

Its repeated pops, rhythmic, until the blades get up to speed. Could that piece in the picture be worn?

My Woods 42 with the swinging blades will do that until they get up to operating RPM. I think it's normal.
