Rear Main Oil Seal

Postby Michael Simchera » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:26 am

Hi,
New member here. I have a 53 cub that is a work in progress. The rear main oil seal is leaking and I would like to replace it. Through research and reading, I understand the new seals do not fit well in the original retainers. The options are peening and using shims and sealant, with mixed results. I've also read that there is some one who makes the correct size seal/retainer combination. Does anyone have that contact information? Any input is appreciated. Thank you, Mike

Send a private message to (tst) Tim, on the forum. He does the seal retainer modification you want.

The problem is that the original seal is no longer made and the substitute seal's OD is about 1/8" larger. The retainer needs to be remachined as a result.

Tim will do the mod for you no problem.

The replacement/substitute CaseIH seal is actually a slightly smaller OD than the original. When used in an original retainer the seal can spin instead of the shaft spinning in the seal. Remachining on the old retainers is done to allow install of a different seal, with a larger OD, to give the proper press fit into the old retainer that the new CaseIH one doesn't have in an old retainer.

Here's a link to the CaseIH seal with explanation on the TM website. http://www.tmtractor.com/new/en/365fp.htm Option #2 is a little pricey but would work just fine (new retainer $185 and new seal $29). They don't list option #3 send it to tst. :D
