What size building do I need ?????

Postby baldwindiesel » Sun Dec 13, 2015 1:54 pm

I'm looking at getting a pre-fab metal building to house my collection of Farmall CUB tractors. My budget is tight, so I need to have a rough idea of how much space I would need: I have 1 Farmall C, and 4 CUB's, plus many CUB implements.
How wide should I make my building, and how long ? I know extra space is nice, but please give a rough idea of what might work. :help:

I can't answer your questions but based on my experience whatever you decide to build will not be large enough. That's unless your collection has some magic way of not growing in the future.   Stan

I had a 30' X 40' post shop building constructed. Total cost was $1015-. Stored inside are two Cubs, a trailer, 10 kw gen set, work bench on the side, storage racks and storage on the sides and ends, and still have room to work on projects.

If I were going to do the shop building again I would add another 10' to the length. In my case the width of the building was limited due to the layout of the building site.

But, I have a 36' X 60' hog barn with 3 tractors stored, log splitter, some Cub implements, and a bunch of other junk and an old hay barn with some implements stored inside. My shop is my main work area. If I need more room for a project I can move tractors out to another building.

I would start out by figuring out the financing, money available. I'm not one who likes to finance anything. I would build what I could afford from cash on hand. Thinking you could add on at a later time.

Also, some implements do not need a lot of protection from the weather. A shed roof and 2 or 3 sides will suffice.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Kevin, What I did was make a list of everything that I wanted to put in it. Got rough measurements of the foot print of all the items and then cut graph paper to those sizes. Leave 18-24" walkway between tractors, etc and see what you end up with. Another thing to remember is how often you will want tractors out, how much "stuff" you'll have to move to get them out and what size and configuration of doors will work best. Plan for additions (ie, more tractors) in the future.

Make it bigger than you need. The cubs tend to breed, and you'll need the space. (Don't ask why I know)

Figure out what you "need", then make it twice as big.

Here's a little visual aid. Of course my little tractors aren't exact size but you can get the general idea. I don't know how much bigger an A is so I made the drawing 20% bigger then the Cub's. The black lines would be a 24 x 24 and the red lines would be a 20 x 20.

Like other's have said they're never big enough. So build as big as you can afford and have room for,

Here's what my 32 x 56 looks like and I still have things outside that I would like inside. I had posted this before, but have reorganized and added a couple LGT's sense then.

I have a 24x40 and my problem is I have more woodworking tools than space so tractors are outside or in father in laws building which is 30 x36. It is full also with 2 h's, 450, 4 cubs, and 2 olivers at the moment. I also have his old fertilizer shed part full.

I wish I could get a 40x80 with half heated for shop and half cold storage. Nothing is big enough, as you always run into thongs to buy.

Good luck with it. I would build it as big as you can.

I have a 24 x 48 with 24 x 24 concrete floor then crushed limestone x 6 in in the other end, 1/4 or 12 x 24 now has a garage door directly to outdoors to move projects easily in and out for working on the cubs and smaller projects as needed. The shop area is all insulated and has knotty pine paneling on the walls 3 service doors and a 9 x 7 roll up door The shop area is where my hand tools and tool boxs will end up residing I have my camper inside yr around in a 12 x 48 area along with my Kubota with cab etc. The entire building has 12 ft. ceilings. That is one thing I would change if I built another and would probably build with 16 or 18 ft ceilings to allow a second story for small parts and misc. storage. The building has served my needs very well and being a little smaller than what is needed forces at least a little bit of self control. I built shelves 2 ' high x 48 ft down each interior wall so with x 2 to 4 ft between the shelves. They are built of 2 x4 lumber with plywood for shelving,

My first thought was what was already said, whatever you decide double it. However, you need to fill in some details to get useful comments. Is this going to be your workshop or are you just building dry storage? Is it OK to shoehorn everything in like birddog showed you or do you want access to most things without first removing everything that went in after it? You considering something permanent on a foundation or you want to go with something more portable and possibly less costly like the tube frame structures?
