Well, I did it pulled the hood (gasp)off my yellow 74.
Several issues that I want to correct. Slack in gov. spring, leaky rad, etc. My fan assy looks like this:
This flanged (washer) nut (that takes a 15/16" wrench) is on the engine end of shaft. The front cover fork does not have a groove for the nut to nest into, as all others that I have seen. I don't see a p/n change for the front cover that would indicate a change in configuration. Nor can I find a change for the nut.
I don't plan to make any changes when I re-assemble, as it has worked for many years with no problem. The fan belt stays tight. Do you think that this was a PO "fix" or an engineering change to prevent breaking off the ear of fork?

Does it appear that the two "ridges" had been ground off to accommodate the different style nut?

Roy, I doubt that Roger's truck will haul 4 big TN boys and tow a trailer also. But we are making plans to come anyway. (without a trailer)
Don, it is hard to tell if it has been ground off or not. If it was, it would have been on a bench. Because, it would be really hard to grind it while on the tractor and get the same good results. From an engineering standpoint with a thick washer on the fan side and this flanged nut on the engine side, it is very stable.
Also, the fan pulley is aligned nicely with the crank pulley.

Re: Hood's Off !!!
That would've been nice on both my '51 and '53. The nut spun in the groove when I tried to loosen the fan. Had to fiddle around wedging a wrench in there to keep the nut from spinning so I could turn the bolt
