First Cub

Hello.

I just purchased a 1947 Cub. It was owned by the man's father and I believe he was the only owner, but it has been sitting in a shed unused for maybe 15 years. It changes gears easily and the engine is free, but I was wondering if there was anything specific I should be sure to check before trying to crank it up for the first time? I probably won't be doing so any time soon, but I want to make sure everything is okay and I still have to get a 6 volt battery for it.

The first thing to do is prime the oil pump. and make sure you have pressure. A great engine can become scrap very quickly.

Looked that up via search and seems easy enough. Thanks a lot for the info. Hopefully I'll have it up and running in the next few weeks.

You are only 2 2/2 hours from sneads Florida. I would advise you to attend the Deep South CubFest February 19th and 20th. There is a lot you can learn with hands on training. Many of the guys in this group will be there and would be willing to help you with a lot of things. Bring your Cub along (I come from Ohio with mine) and the guys will help a lot. Unscrew the air valve screw on the side of of the carb, use a needle and run through the hole, Blow it out or use carb cleaner,Wd 40 to clean it. Be careful, there is a small gasket behind the screw that you do not want to lose.

If you split carb, be very careful not to break idle tube ( don't ask how I know this).

Just thought I'd give an update and say thanks to everyone for all the info.

Turns out I didn't need a battery, and if I had one it wouldn't matter, as the original owner seems to have done away with everything regarding electric start. Only thing remaining of it is the starter itself and the rod, which he had hanging off the choke rod. After replacing the points, cleaning the carb, and getting new cables to go from the magneto to the spark plugs I finally got it fired up over the weekend. I had to pull it off to get it started, but it ran well once I just about fully choked it, turns out some more crud had broken loose in the tank and I'll have to take that off to clean it again. After that it looks like it'll run well.

It isn't too late to make it to the Deep South CubFest in Sneads Fl Feb 19 & 20. Come with or without your Cub and you will learn more about your tractor and how to repair and maintain it than you can imagine. If you bring the Cub you will have plenty of "experts" to help you get it running right.

hello from the deep south , the guys are spot on , barnyards advice is good . if anyway possible , head to the deep south cub fest in sneeds , florida. not only great folks with unlimited knowledge of cubs , but good food ,too ! people come from all over the country , you will be glad you went . coppersmythe.............(louisiana) PS: that sound of the first cub coming back to life is SWEET .

Would echo what others have suggested: try to attend the Deep South CubFest. Even if you cannot bring your Cub, you'll meet some of the nicest people who genuinely want to help answer any questions. Besides, there'll be enough projects going on that you can observe and see how things are done, so when you return home, you'll be loaded with info. Even if you're only there a morning or afternoon, it would be worth it.

Glad to hear you got your Cub started...now you're off to the races!
