Extending front wheels out
They have probably been all the way in since 1951. I got the two bolts loose and the cotter key out of the pin. But the pin won't budge even with a hammer. What is my chances of getting that axel to slide out ?

Re: Extending front wheels out
"Slide" out? Probably not. They took a long time to get stuck in there, so be patient and take your time getting them out. First is the pins, hit them with some pbblaster or kroil and smack with a hammer each time you walk by until you get them out. You could also try heat. I have had some luck replacing the pins with bolts of a slightly smaller diameter and driving around to get the tubes loose. On my 1974, they were already loose in the tubes, so its a good thing I was paying attention so I didn't wallow the pin holes out. The hardest ones I ever moved were on the 1979, go figure. I drove around mowing for quite a while with smaller bolts and still had to smack on them to get them out. I know some have used bottle jacks and blocking between the 2 spindles to help things along. Good luck!!

Re: Extending front wheels out
Understand I know nothing about your particular tractor, but would like to share my story as it could have ended in disaster. My axles were set one hole out (almost all the way in) and wanted them spaced out. I ASSumed my axles were rusted in place like most out there. My plan was to replace the 1/2 inch pins with 7/16 bolts and drive the tractor around to loosen up the axles (an approach I read about on the forum). Luckily, I jacked up the front wheels before replacing the pins with bolts. I jacked the tractor down and the bolts would not move up and down. I was very confused. I scratched my head and said to myself, what are the chances that …… Yup, the axles were not stuck. They rotated when I jacked the tractor down, binding up the bolts. Had I driven the pins out without jacking the wheel up, I would have been in a world of hurt when the axle rotated and the tractor fell over. I think there is a picture somewhere on the forum where that very thing happened. So, before driving out those pins, make sure the front wheels are jacked up off the ground. --Lee

I also know that somewhere in the archives there are some pictures of the Late George Willers' method of getting the axle tubes unstuck.
Cannot locate them at the moment.

Re: Extending front wheels out
I've had success with a couple of axles, with a combination of Kroil, heat, and tapping with a hammer. Axles were off the tractor. Freed a couple at Cecil's, with his port-a-power,and blocks between them. I'm afraid to use too much hydraulic force, and bending something. Have one in the shop now, that one side freed, reasonably well. The other is a bit stubborn.

I got the pins out and the steering linkage unhooked. The tractor is on jack stands. I know the axle is not going to pull straight out. So shouldn't it twist front to back. I have been pounding on it and spraying it. Next step I guess is heat

porta power and apply some tension up high as you can on the spindle, or hyd bottle jack sideways and a 4x4 board. just a small amount and start hammer tapping and spraying with penetrating oil.

Re: Extending front wheels out
Don't want to rain on the parades but.......I needed to replace an axle extension that was bent back, not enough to prevent the knuckle from rotating OK but it made the tractor look like crap. The complete front axle had been removed from the steering gear housing. The axle pins came out fine and I removed both knuckles. But no go on getting the damaged extension to come out of the axle tube. I soaked the end in blaster and every other chemical I could think of including some persuasion with heavy hammers. No go. I finally took it into the IH shop and told them I needed it out and it did not need to be saved if extreme measures were required. Well they managed to get it out and by the appearance of the extension they removed they had to use some real mussel and creativity. It looked like they had finally needed to beat it out. I got a used extension that fit fine. As a matter of fact I was surprised at the clearance between the inside axle diameter and the outside diameter of the extension. Just for giggles I tried to chip off some of the rust patches that remained on the bad extension. I could not chip it off, it was completely fused to the extension. It had just "grown" inside the axle tube. As an experiment I got a long narrow plastic tub long enough to hold the axle tube with the other extension still in it and deep enough to submerge it in a bath of white vinegar. After submersion it was not long before bubbles appeared on the surface and the vinegar quickly started to turn a rusty brown. I let the assembly soak for 10 days. It made no difference. After rinsing the axle I used the blaster and all my other penetrating fluids and twisted, pulled and hammered to the point I was afraid of ruining the extension and knuckle. It would not budge. So the final score on the front axle extension removal adventure was Cub two and human one. So I will not have a cub that can have both of its front axles extended.
I was told that a product like "Slip Plate", a dry graphite lubricant would work to help keep the axle tube and extension from "growing" together. I definitely will do something on my one good extension before remounting it into the axle tube.

I finally broke down and took mine to a machinist... he had them apart two days later.

Another day! I'm going to try the 7/16 bolt in the pin hole. I've sprayed and pounded till I have cramps in my fingers.
