1954 Farmall Cub restoration
First post here i'm a newbie, I started a restoration on my late grandfathers cub tonight it did run but the engine is locked up i pulled it in gear and it freed the engine but it locked up once again and i can't get it loose. I took the head off and it had a little corrosion (can blew off exhaust pipe) any good way to free it up without a total rebuild?

The starter can be jammed. Unbolt it and see if the engine turns.

Re: 1954 Farmall Cub restoration
FYI, that HOW TO section is great...take some time to scroll through and even print out some that you might be doing, like brake repairs and front seal/pulley removal, etc.
I am pretty sure I have read all of them and learned quite a bit and many tricks to make jobs easier.
Good luck and post photos as you go along...we do like pictures!!!

Re: 1954 Farmall Cub restoration
I had this happen on a just purchased cub last fall. from all of the posts I read patience is key and I agree. I kept putting penetrating oil in the spark plug holes and rocked the tractor while in gear. I also have a hand crank which helped. You may also want to open the valve cover and spray in there as well if a valve is stuck. I also dropped the oil pan to spray up from the bottom. I used commercial penetrating oils and also tried the home brew of 50% acetone and 50% automatic transmission fluid I read about here. It took a few weeks but it freed up.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Re: 1954 Farmall Cub restoration
Ok finally got it loose, after 3 days of CRC rocking it,tapping and finally a pipe wrench! I have the head off and the cylinders look ok Im thinking of running a hone in the cylinders lightly the valves are sticking so I'm thinking of getting new springs. so now its time to buy parts ...Oh by the way I found out its a 1949 (11-29-R) not a 1954. My question now is how do I find out what motor it is to purchase parts and where can I buy them? BTW I own a Auto Body Shop I'm not a mechanic but it will look pretty when i get done!

Re: 1954 Farmall Cub restoration
valve springs are probably fine unless they are rusted, the valve just got enough rust from sitting to stick in the guide, once it gets running a while it will wear the crap off and be fine

Hi,
Welcome to the website. Farmall Cubs have the IH C60 engine. That's 60 cubic inches.
You could look at the serial number and then check the list at the top of the page on here, and see what year it says the Cub is. Here is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing where the serial number plate, and engine serial numbers are. Click on the pic makes it bigger.

Re: 1954 Farmall Cub restoration
Unless something is different on your cub, it has a C60 engine. Check the engine SN stamped in the block boss behind the carb and along with the year (1949) you should be able to get just about anything with that information. Parts list is in the manuals link above, free download manual TC37F will tell you just about everything you will need to know. Lots of other useful information located there as well.
