At first I didn't see it, this new 53 is a little different from the 48. know I know the mechanical advance pivot! Thanks.

I just got myself added (or perhaps re-added) to this forum. Thank you for the add. This is a great post for a person like me. I'm mechanical, but this old system is a bit foreign, and I don't want to ruin anything by diving in eyes wide shut! I appreciate the guidance that these groups provide.

what I should have done with the cub I just brought home.....PRIME THE OIL PUMP. funny I didn't see that on the list, maybe I missed it? :P

Just got my First farmall Cub. I am at a total lost of where to start. It has not been started for several years. Not sure if it will actually start,
thanks for the above advice and check list. Can't wait to get started.

I would read the Cub owner's manual, if you never have before. It has much info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. I posted a link to one on page 4 of this post. There are owner's manuals for different years of Cubs on this website, at the top of the page, at Cub Info, then go to Rudi's Manuals.

If the Cub has not been started in years, the oil pump probably needs priming. The pump can lose it's prime sitting for years, or less time than that too. If the oil pump won't suck up oil from the oil pan, after losing it's prime, then there is no oil pressure when the engine is running.
Engine damage can happen running the engine with no oil pressure.

Below is a picture of where the hole is that I use for priming the oil pump. Just remove the oil filter top, and oil filter, and it is easy to see, use a light if you need to.
I fill a clean oil can with motor oil, and pump it into the hole, you might need more than one filling of the oil can to fill the passages in the engine.
Put the oil filter and cover on before starting the engine.
Watch the oil gauge after starting, it takes 15 - 20 seconds for the gauge to show pressure, it has to fill the oil filter housing before the gauge will show pressure.
