Torque specs

Postby LRiddle » Wed Mar 23, 2016 4:56 pm

Sorry if I keep asking easy questions, but I'm looking for torque specs for the radiator and I can't seem to find them. In the GSS 1016 cooling system manual it just says to tighten them evenly and in GSS 1411 it doesn't show torque specs for dot bolts and also says that those specs are for rigid joints with no gaskets. So do I just go by feel, or is there an actual number to set to?

Also, do you recommend rtv silicone for the inlet, outlet and radiator gaskets?

Blue Ribbon Service Manual GS-1411, page 1-60 (Engine Section 1) says to tighten the radiator cap screws to 20 ft-lbs. I personally would suggest using a permatex or similar sealant for those gasketed surfaces.

Got it. Thanks. Looks like I need to buy a lighter torque wrench. A good excuse to buy a new tool.

And consider chasing all the threads so you can get an accurate torque reading.

FYI, TM Tractors has a nice set of stainless screws for the radiator:

Yep. I read that on an earlier post, thanks. I did consider the bolt set. Might as well go with all new when you rebuild I guess.
