Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
I am looking at a 1947 Cub four digit and am wondering what it is worth? It is # 144X and is in decent shape. Runs good with no smoke. Been sitting for a while. No welds on front end, radiator or rear axle housings that I can see. It has an original sickle mower on it with hand lift. The front tires are shot, rear hold air but don't match. It has part of the battery box, no lid. Has front lights and rear light bracket (no rear light). Fenders are as good as I have seen. Hood needs a little work around the muffler hole but otherwise is pretty good. Needs a grill screen. Still has the decals on the hood that read "McCorkick Farmall Cub". Has both sides that attach to grill. Can not see a "circle" decal on them but they look like they have extra paint on them. Not sure if I can do some cleaning/sanding and find them or not. Any help as to what this is worth like it sits? I probably won't restore it just put 4 new tires on it and get all the leaks stopped and in good running order.

Location has a lot to do with average selling price , where I am located It would sell for $ 1500.00- 2000.00 with the mower.

Unfortunately, the low serial number doesn't help the value much, if at all.
If it was a 3-digit and the first number was a 5 and the second number was a 0 or a 1, and you were at a big collector auction, you might be able to "cash in" but most any other day of the week what you have is just another old Cub.

I agree with Matt regarding the serial number. It's just another Cub, nothing special as far as that goes.

What he said and the same goes for demo tractors.
I might pay a little more if the engine s/n matched the tractor but it must be in good condition, I think the early one's had problems with the castings breaking.
Not sure when the numbers quit matching and the circle decal was no longer used.

Re: Four digit Cub---What's it worth?
If I remember right, the Circle Cub decal stopped just over serial #3500. Top the average Cub seller that won't mean a thing. In the Midwest, that tractor with working sickle would probably be priced around the $1500 mark.
Of course, if an seller thinks he has something valuable, the price will be higher and therein lies the challenge...

Re: Four digit Cub---What's it worth?
Thanks to everyone for their input. I traded a shotgun for it and have way way way below $1,000 in it actually less than half that and we are both happy. I got to pick it up tomorrow. The only problem I have found is the engine has been changed. All the other casting dates are correct.

Re: Four digit Cub---What's it worth?
Some things fell thru yesterday after work and I was able to go pick it up. Runs great, no smoke and no out of the ordinary noise. Sickle even works, had to try it out.

Re: Four digit Cub---What's it worth?
When I got it in the shop the first thing I did was pull the oil plug and oil filter. Took the hood off so I can rewire it. Was looking at the head and found this. The head is 3-28-Q which makes it probably the original head. The block has obviously been changed, the block is the only casting I have found that isn't period correct. I got the date off the transmission but forgot to take a picture. It's 6-something-Q. I'll try and remember it today. When I got my 49 Cub it had welds all over both rear axle housings and the tranny was cracked and the front axle had weld all over it. I found good axle housings and a perfect front axle and fixed it even changed the tranny. I have not found a single weld on this 1947 tractor anywhere. With the shotgun trade, 2 new front tires and tubes on order and an oil filter I am in this tractor for about $458 so far.

Very nice. Check the casting date on the lower bolster (bottom side just above the axle I think). That is a commonly replaced part. You should get a good aftermarket OEM style wiring harness. This survivor tractor deserves it!

I agree. I'd rather have the Cub than I had a shotgun in a safe I haven't shot in 6 years.

Thanks! I will check the rest of the casting dates when I put new seals/gaskets in everything. I will probably make my own wiring harness, yeah it won't be original but neither will a new aftermarket one. The harness on it now has to be original, it is shot!
