Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
Got my battery box front & lid made at a fab shop that does some of our fab work. I told them don't weld the corners or cut any notches, I would take care of it. Now I have to make the two tabs for the top and have a friend of mine spot weld them on to look original.

Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
Well it happens. I messed up. I only had one clamp holding the angle plate as I was using the milling machine to put radius pockets in. The end mill grabbed, spun the angle plate and eat some metal off. I started welding and thought I better pause to take pictures of MY mess up. Yes, I messed up. I can't blame anything or anyone else. Just wanted to share to show it does happen. A man told me once "show me someone who doesn't mess up and I will show you someone who isn't doing anything". Lot of truth there!

After a little grinding and redoing the 2 cuts here's what I came out with. Now to make those 2 tabs.

As long as you weren't hurt during that escapade. Metal can be fixed as you've shown. Thanks for keeping it human and fallible.
Box ought to last a while. I use large grommets on the cables to prevent wear and close up the excess space in the holes.

Battery box lid tabs made. Bent them with a vise, hammer and a piece of 1/4" thick aluminum. Now to take to friend and have them spot welded. I drilled a hole in the lid and welded them into position so they won't get twisted between here and there.

Your right, things can be fixed as long as no one got hurt is the main thing! I will check on the grommets, thanks! I got the grommets for the head light wires through the hood at the Tractor Supply near me, I will check and see if they have them that big for the battery cable.

Not to be insulting in any way , you seem very skilled in metal working. Just making sure you know what climb cutting on a mill is and that it didn't contribute to the end mill grabbing? Everyone's done it at least once, along with the "not enough clamps" set up.

Not insulting in any way Tim. I do know all about climb cutting, it for real was my fault. I was in a hurry and put one of the clamps I need to throw away on a big angle plate and "trusted" it would hold. After it moved I clamped it with two clamps like I should have in the beginning so it wouldn't have a pivot point and it worked great. I was just plunging down with the end mill taking maybe .020" of a cut at a time and was on the third cut when it happened.

Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
Took lid by my friends shop on the way home and had him spot weld the tabs. I guess I should have told him I wanted them centered but if it was perfect what good would that be? Close enough for a tractor! Time for primer.

Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
I been thinking about these brake drums. Neither is really usable, not to me anyways. I couldn't decide if I wanted to make them or spend more cabbage on buying new ones so I decided to just make them. I am going with steel. Got to thinking about it and it's a 9 hp Cub not a 900 hp race car so I don't think stopping will be a problem. It's not like it will be used much anyway. Also was thinking about looks, who's gonna look in the brake hole and see them anyway? If they say something about them not being original I will tell them they can buy original and put it on if they want to. Function is what I am after on this.

Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
I got a good start and have a lot left to do. Between keeping the 3 axis milling machine running and working on some clutch parts for my dads recent John Deere A purchase I am getting worn out. I have to chamfer the side where the bolt goes and make it look like it should but it will get there soon enough.

Re: Restoration Project - Four digit Cub
I tell you what, I'm very envious of your machining skills and handiwork! Sometime, when my wife works full time and I quit my day job.....(yea, who am I kidding), ok, when I win the lottery..... (guess I better start playing), I'm going to find someone with a shop like yours and just offer to work for free so I can learn how to do that kind of stuff. I'm pretty good with a metal lathe, but that's about the extent of my "milling" experience. Again, VERY nice work and keep the photos/posts coming. Can't wait to see this all coming together.

Powdercoat man text a picture to me this morning with some shiny silver. Burnt them off, sandblasted them and fresh silver. Found the date on the wheel as well.
