Purty Newly Painted Hood
Got my yellow cub's hood painted with Iron Guard. Now working on a mini-fest with Steve, JR and others to install it and button in back up.
Anyone have any advice for installing the side decals from TM?

Looking good! I've heard of people spraying water with a little soap under decals so you can slide them into position if need be but I've never tried that.

Yes you can do that and I've heard and tried windex (not my first choice) but want you want is a spray bottle with water and a little Dreft baby detergent. I've done small decals and large decals like what is running the full length of my Dodge Charger. Dreft is the way to go. I also use blue painters tape. Hang the decal in place before you peel the backing with the tape and leave little strips of tape on the body as guides to help position the decal. It doesn't have to line up with the decal, you can lay the blue tape down so that the backing paper edge meets it.
Lightly spray the panel and slide the decal to where you want it. Then gently squeegee the water, working the water and bubbles from the center outwards. Be gentle! Once its squeegeed out leave it be and it'll set itself in.
Which decals did you buy? Mylar on a clear background or cut vinyl (my choice)? If you got the mylar make damn sure there is no dust or hairs on the surface or it'll stand out like a sore thumb once its stuck.
Mike.
The small cut vinyl fish decal was floated into place....
...as were the black side stripes on the Dodge.

If you notice on the pic of the hood, you can see green masking tape for locating the decal.

A couple of drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water, spray the decal and the tank, use a credit card to squeegee out the water.

Re: Purty Newly Painted Hood
Don't get too aggressive with the credit card because you will start scuffing the decal and the paint. BTDT.
It's best to just get the decal in place, squeegee out as much water as you can, and let it dry. The more you mess with it the more chance you have of shifting the decal out of place.

This is the decal. Description says it is vinyl. There is a white backing on it. Does this peal off and either locate and stick it on dry or wet or either?

Re: Purty Newly Painted Hood
When I put the decals (die-cut vinyl) on my SA, I Googled installing vinyl decals, and printed off a couple very good sets of instructions. Whether the decal is large or small can change the methed...wet or dry. Do a search and see what fits your confidence level. I used a spray bottle of water with a couple drops of dish soap and masking tape, as mentioned, for the longer ones.
Oh, and one comment made in one post I read said be careful using the edges of the paper holding the decal as a guide for positioning, since.they often are NOT cut straight/parallel to the actual decal!

Hi,
I think the hood/tank looks very nice. How did you paint it? Iron Guard comes in rattle cans, or did you use a spray gun? I wish our Yellow Cub had a paint job like that. Trying to get a northern member to paint our Cub's tin. Long waiting list

Re: Purty Newly Painted Hood
I don't trust having any chemicals under my decals when finished (i.e. Windex), so I use a couple drops of dish soap in a spray bottle (warm water).
TIP: Take the backing you've just pulled off and use it as a cover on top of the decal while squeegeeing out the water. It will protect your decal surface under the pressure.
Your hood looks great, BTW.

Re: Purty Newly Painted Hood
This was sprayed by a semi-pro, who works from home. I got a qt of paint from my dealer, which only took a little more than 1/2 of it. The hood was actually in pretty good shape, just the wrong color white. It had to be removed to check radiator anyway, so I bit the bullet and painted it the correct color. While it was off I made new alternator brackets, removed slop from governor linkage, installed new spring and a few other tweaks. I am pleased with the results.

As the others have advised, a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water. Don't spray on a lot of water, only enough to wet the surface. I've used Windex in the past and it worked fine, but some folks, who should know better than myself, have said that there are harmful ingredients in it so I now stay away from that. Hood looks great, by the way!

Sorry this is not a good choice. I used it for the fish decals above and it will work but I found it softens the glue on the decal and takes longer to set up once put in place. Those decals did eventually set solid but I wasn't as comfortable working with it and had my doubts that the adhesive would recover. You want something that will create a temporary barrier between the glue and the surface without dissolving the glue but still be removed when the decal is in place.
The first decals I installed are the ones on the Dodge and that was back in the late eighties. The company selling the restoration decals specifically named Dreft as it is a gentle detergent and squeegees away without harming the decal or its adhesive. I've done a lot of these since not on tractors but collector cars and boats, I still believe Dreft is the best choice.
Dish soap is better than windex but still slicker than Dreft so its harder to remove when its time to set. Use a very small amount, just enough to know there is some soap in the mix, no more. Using a spray bottle wet the heck out of the surface when you do it.

Re: Purty Newly Painted Hood
My experience... I used Windex as well when I put some decals on, after a few minutes they started to come up and wrinkle. I found out the ammonia in it causes the problem. A little dish detergent, just enough to get it soapy and position while working out any bubbles is my preferred way.
