I think I remember someone saying that non-ammonia Windex does work okay, but I haven't tried it.

Probably only need enough soap to break the surface tension on the water so it won't bead.

Well we finally did it! Applied new decals and installed freshly (OK, several weeks old) painted hood. Steve Koons and a few other observers came by this morning for a mini-cubfest. Well, they might have come by for coffee and doughnuts, also.

But we had a good time. Also, changed shifter forks in "Uncle Bob".

I switched to the dry method years ago, here's how I do it:

1. With the transfer tape (the white stuff on the back) still on, attached a strip of good, blue painters tape across the top edge of the decal.
2. Using the blue tape as a guide, position the decal where you want it.
3. The blue tape acting as a hinge, fold the decal upward on itself and slowly remove the transfer tape from the decal. After the transfer tape is removed, fold the decal back so as to begin installing the decal. Be careful not to let the decal rest on the hood until you are ready to start with the install. Depending on the size of the decal, it would be great if you have help to keep the decal from touching the hood.
4. Starting in the middle, work outward and downward, lay the decal down using a good quality squeegee. Remind your helpers that their only job is to keep the decal form touching the hood...nothing else.

If you encounter any bubbles, use a straight pin to puncture the bubble and carefully go around the bubble, working out the air. Allow ample time for the paint to dry completely before you attempt to apply decals. If not, in the drying process the paint will force the decal off the hood.

Good luck.

The only problem I foresee is applying a flat decal on a curved surface, like the rear of the gas tank.

If you look at my first post on page one, you can see how I use green masking tape to use as a locator for the decal. Steve installed the decals dry with no problem. By the time I turned around to get another doughnut, he was done. :{_}: :{_}:
