Universal Mount - Restoration

Postby PVF1799 » Wed Apr 13, 2016 6:01 pm

Hi all - Going to use this single post to document the progress on our Universal Mount. Tell ya - it felt good to get my arms inside the blasting cabinet and then spraying Red.

Regrettable I didn't get a photo of the mount before I disassembled it. But I think the pile of parts speaks for itself. I'm only missing one jam nut for the spring tensioners - No idea how long its been gone - perhaps it was never there since Dad bought this used in the 1950's.

All the best - Ken

Some of ya'll have beautiful painting areas with professional hanging racks made of steel. Some people hang plastic Easter eggs in their trees. I prefer IH Red Farmall Parts.

Did the whole FCUB Rex'48 like this. It can be challenging.

Ken,
I have about 12 of those jam nuts for the tension spring rods. I can send you one. $5 plus shipping. PM if interested. You definitely need it to get the front cultivators level on both sides.

I have a question Ken, why are you painting this red? Isn't it supposed to be blue?

Thank you Jim for clarifying for me. I have 3 sets of cultivators and all 3 are blue. I have cleaned and repainted most of the parts and all had blue with no sign of red. I have no idea what year Cub they were on but evidently early ones.

The picture at top of this thread, the flat piece looks like it has a sign of blue paint on it in a couple places, or is that scale on the material?

In that early photo there is one blue part that I painted last year to keep it from rusting further. As I've been sand blasting these parts it's clear that it was factory Red. This is evident in many areas that were not exposed to the elements. From what I learned last year from this forum. The implements like cultivators, planters etc. are blue. When you get into other implements you'll see IH Cream mixed with blue. If you search through posts by me you'll see the color checking I do before painting anything. :D

Thank you Ken for helping me understand and I applaud you for doing your research before going further. I am learning something every time I get on here.
