That may be good news in disguise. Starter problems are usually easy (and cheap) to fix but often are enough to make somebody quit using the tractor.

Well not a lot of progress today. New plugs, wires, points, and condenser. There were two valves that were stuck, but freed up with a little work. Compression good on 2, 3, 4, but little on number 1 (Thumb test). I did get it to smoke a little and try to start, but no go.

One of the reasons things haven't progressed as fast as they should have. pic of bees in a tree. I have 6 hives in my back yard, and four of them have swarmed. I did take a few more pics of the tractor with the hood off. In one of them you can see that the pointer for the timing is not there. I can't tell if there was ever one there. I thought that the head was cast different where the air cleaner bolts on, but it looks like maybe a owner modification.

Looks like the pointer might have been on there at one point. I see a dark spot by the center bolt in the picture.

I know you might think its over the top, but I would ask that guy where he bought it and even might ask him to show me where it was. i'd tell him why so he doesn't think you're crazy. haha. :hattip: :tractor:

I have asked, but he was not sure even which town he bought it in. I would love to know the story behind this tractor, but for now it is lost.

Studs, front and rear, left side of engine. You won't know until you pull the head. Check to see if the threads in the block for the head bolts have been enlarged, then retapped for studs. May have been a previous owner fix for broken head bolts.

Certainly an interesting tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

what is the casting date on the head? That'll tell you right there if they have ever torn into it. But its possible they have torn into it and used the original head back on it.

Here is a pic of the head, but I don't see any date code. There is a part number there. I have been out of town for the last few days so no progress on the engine.
