Cub dies after 20 minutes

Postby Bill Mureiko » Sun Apr 17, 2016 6:30 pm

I apologize in advance that this question gets asked quite a bit. My brand new '49 Cub dies after about 20 minutes. It sounds like the gas runs out, but there is plenty of gas. Lines and carb have been cleaned. It sounds like the hot coil problem, but the case does not feel hot to the touch. Everything about the problem sounds like the overheated coil problem that so many have--is it possible for that to be the problem but not be hot to the touch? Anything else I am missing.

It sounds absolutely perfect until it stops. Takes about 5 or so minutes to be able to start again, and it starts right up.

Many thanks and glad to have my first Cub! This is a real nice one--came out of a garage of an old gentleman who passed away and took really good care of it.

Open gas tank when stops, if restarts then vent is obstructed.

Yes, I tried that, and it dies with the gas cap off as well.

Is the fuel shutoff valve fully open? When the engine stops, have you immediately opened the drain on the carb to check the fuel flow? There might be an obstruction at the tank shutoff valve or screen or even in the valve itself. Stan

Yes, valve fully open and brand new screen on sediment bowl. I have not checked flow out of carb yet and will give that a try. Thank you.

Failure of a coil after running a few minutes is not necessarily a sign of coil over heating, may be a coil with winding opening or shorting to ground after it just warms a little. Check to see if you have a good strong spark from the coil when it dies. Condenser can also cause that.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I would have to agree with John it is possible your coil is failing.Next time it shuts off check the temperature of the coil I would just abut guess you can't put your hand on the coil.

There may be screen in the fuel inlet fitting/elbow where it enters the carb. Mine had the same symptoms and I found that the screen was plugged.

I had a "bug" in the fuel system. Actual carcass of a beetle, in the top of the sediment bowl inlet. Flipped back and forth, stopping fuel, sometimes, and allowing flow, other times. I'm leaning to=wards coil issues, on yours, though.

I'm with Ed, leaning towards coil issue. However, I've had similar symptoms with a failing condenser, like John said. So definitely keep that in mind too.

If it's consistently stopping after roughly the same amount of run time each time, it's more likely to be ignition related than something random like a chunk of crud floating around in the fuel system. A bug would give you more random run times, while a coil overheating would take roughly the same amount of time each time.

Pull the center wire off the distributor cap and hold it near the oil filter housing while you crank the tractor over the next time it quits. That will tell you if you have spark.

If you get an arc, then remove the distributor cap, rotor, and points cover.

Observe the quality of spark from the center distributor wire and the color of the arc at the points. A yellow arc at the points indicates a bad condenser.
I have an excuse. CRS.
