Serial number questions.

Postby LRiddle » Sun Apr 17, 2016 10:39 pm

Ok so my tag is completely shot save for the numbers stamped on it. One is 1800, which is the engine RPM. The other reads 13440, which should be the serial number. The problem is in the database it shows that as being a '48 cub, but the 6 casting dates I found are all from spring and summer of '51. Engine serial number also comes out to '51. I want to replace my plate with a new one but I want the correct serial number or else I feel like I should leave it blank. Any thoughts?

It could be possible that the radiator bolster has been changed. With all the 51 casting codes I would have to assume it is a 51

I agree with Steve. Someone's replaced the front bolster before you owned it (?) and that accounts for most of the numbers showing a '51 except the front.

Any other parts on the tractor showing a '48?

Agree with Steve, bolster changed. You will probably never be able to come up with the correct serial number for the tractor.

Your choice on what to do for a serial number on the new plate. You could have the plate stamped with a combination of the year, 51, a dash, and the current serial number.
I have an excuse. CRS.

That's kind of what I think happened. I know those bolsters are prone to cracking if the water isn't drained in the winter. The problem is the casting number is hard to read on the bolster. It's pretty well hidden by the axle.

Any other parts on the tractor showing a '48?

None that I've found.

Check the casting date on the bolster. It's underneath, between the bolster and the steering gear housing base. Hard to see.

I agree with the above, it sounds like a bolster change. There isn't a way to find out the original serial number of the tractor. The closest you will get is by looking at the engine casting number and compare with relatively close numbers in the database. That will probably only get you to within a few hundred though.
