When Betty is cold she stalls out when I initiate the hydraulics. Isn't an issue after warm up.
What should I check?
Thanks!
Kent

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
Conduct complete engine tune up. Cold, the hydraulics shouldn't stall the engine.
My Cub, the hydraulics are a bit "jerky" when cold, initial engine start up. The hydraulic operation smooths out once the engine and hydraulic fluid warms up.

I have an excuse. CRS.

My touch control worked well for 30 years with 10w motor oil. When it started to act up I changed to HyTran and that seems to have worked better for the last 5 or 6 years.

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
What oil do you have in the hydraulics? Like Clark, I suspect it is the wrong weight. engine may also need a tune up as Eugene mentioned. Also how cold are we talking about? If you are talking about normal operation you may need to choke the engien a little till it warms up to handle the hydraulics, especially when lowering, just like it may need a little choke to pull a load till warm.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
Thanks for the suggestions
Has recently been tuned up, not sure what type of fluid the previous owner used.
Was sitting for some time so I'm going to change all of the fluids.
John - this was less than 30 seconds after startup

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
These old gasoline engines are always "cold blooded" to some degree. Sometimes you can get one tuned to perfection but finding the magic formula for a particular engine can be difficult. More often than not, they will cough, spit, sputter, and/or stall to some degree when cold if you try to work them too soon after starting.
The tuneup might be recent, but something isn't quite right with it. The fuel/air/timing mixture isn't quite right when the engine is cold, but as you said, it's fine after it's warmed up a little... There's always a compromise with carbureted engines. Good cold running generally means you give up something when its warm.

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
Just curious, how well do you operate thirty seconds after you wake up? I think modern computer controlled engines may have skewed your thinking a bit. If it does it three or four (actual timed minutes) after you start it and let it idle and maybe slowly ease the throttle up and down a little, then I think you have a problem. On two of my Cubs at thirty seconds in colder weather I'm still hunched over feathering the choke and talking to them to to keep them running.Cub Kent wrote:........ this was less than 30 seconds after startup

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
My Super A, the Super C and 2 Cubs at work all do this. As others have said, just give it a minute or two.

Re: Hydraulic initiation stalls engine
Yes I am just here to brag and karma will probably come back to bite me...
I guess my ol' Ruth must be tuned 'near perfect'. It came that way when I got him 3 years ago. I have never had to use the choke and the only time it stalls is when I forget to turn on the gas. She's a working tractor too so hydraulics are tested regularly and right at cold start up. I have witnessed your tractor starting up and I think it may be its nature to be a little cold blooded! She sounds good though! I'm curious to see what happens after you change the fluids...see ya tomorrow.
