I have an engine block I am trying to figure out the year but it has left me a little confused, the stamped #s are 60CT286854, the casting code date is tough to see and it appears to be 4 ? T, I know it is a late engine as it has the cutout around the lower hose where it bolts to the bolster, a T code is a 1972 but with the cutout I am sure it is newer, and the stamped block # 286584 is off the charts which is clear to read, could this be a replacement block?
thanks Tim

Re: Cub Block ID
I can't say either way on the cut out by the lower water passage. But according to the Cub Database, an engine number around 286K would go along with a tractor serial number around 239K. That would be 1972.

I don't know when the cut out was added. Since they didn't do a part number change it is tough to track down. Other than a long stripe, the newest one I have is an early ('68, '69 or so) 154 that has no cut out.

I don't think IH had a combine that small by '72.

Here is what I've found. I will have to check that one tractor that I didn't have a good picture of. The next oldest tractor from the 1972 model I had was a 1963 model. Wish I had a couple of 1971's to check but I don't. Hope this all helps. If I had to guess, I bet they changed it over when IH did the small changes in mid-1972 (key start, etc.). Both of my 1972 models were key start.

I didn't think about adding the (2) 154 Cub LoBoy tractors to the list. Here they are.............
- 1971 Cub 154 LoBoy (s/n: 20751) - No cutout in the block
- 1974 Cub 154 LoBoy (s/n: 34613) - ? I need to check in person

From what I've found, you might want to check the numbers on your 1974 Cub as it would be consistent to have a cutout. I still need to look at the two other tractors that I didn't have a picture of to see what they have.
