1966 Cub won't start, no ignition

Postby robobike2 » Fri May 27, 2016 11:27 am

last week the cub was running great for a good two hours of grass cutting. Last night I went to start it and it cranked over fine but would not start. I noticed the and AMP meter does not move when I turn the key. Normally it moves to the Discharge side of center then after it starts to move to the charge side. So I think something is up with either the switch or perhaps the regulator. I'm not an expert so I need a trouble shooting breakdown. Where should I start? Lights work, starter works, everything looks fine from what I can see. Thanks......Rob :help:

Initial diagnosis based upon initial post.

Compression good/satisfactory since engine ran last week.

Fuel problem. Shut off at gas tank?

Regulator has nothing to do with no start problem.

Probably ignition related problem. Check for battery voltage at terminal on side of distributor. Got voltage, check to see if the points are stuck open.

No battery voltage at side of distributor, start checking ignition wiring back towards the switch. When you find voltage, the problem will be the next appliance or wire after the voltage point.

My initial thought, ignition points fault.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Turn the switch on and check power to the input side of the coil. If no, determine why. If yes check the spark when the points open and close. If Yes, check spark at the plugs. If no spark at points, determine cause and repair.

Thanks for the insight. I'll get looking at it these starting points weekend.

You're a great resource for someone who only dabbles in these great old machines. Rob
