Hardware store rattle can paint colors

Postby LilCub » Mon Jun 06, 2016 12:50 pm

I have ready many posts on this and I know it has been covered but I am just trying to get some clarity on all the options for a yellow cub. I am planning to paint implement parts only with this as I go, a small piece at a time, and Iron Guard is not an option for now (100+ miles to IH dealer one way + money). My tractor has been repainted by the previous owner and not sure what paint was used so I am not expecting an exact match, just wanting to make sure I am looking at the closest to correct colors I can get and and have a descent protective layer until I can fully restore the implements.

I have read that the majic tractor paint at TSC isn't great but for a temp fix it is the easiest for me to get. Looks like School bus Yellow and I.H. White are the ones I should be looking at for this brand?

I can get Ace paint locally too and from what I read it is preferred by most over the Majic brand. I would need School Bus Yellow and Almond Gloss for the best match?

Are there any others I am missing like Rustoleum or Valspar that come in a rattle can that are a good color match and can be found at local hardware stores?

Unless they have changed it TSC paint is thin and runs easily not to mention you will need more coats for it to even look decent. Go with a name brand whatever you decide.

Any idea what the correct colors are called for the name brands? Also the "Almond" from Ace concerns me as mine doesn't look almond at all but it's not a pure white either but they don't have "IH White"

I see Rustoleum makes a sunburst and safety yellow as well as a Canvas white???

What implements are you trying to paint these colors?

For now just a FH lift rod replacement from tst and then my C-2 mower mule drive and parts which are original white. Also have disk harrow showing original white paint (will go black on disks etc.) FH plow, and cultivator parts again all showing white and black except back of plow share looks baby blue under the rust.

I've used Ace's "gloss almond" for the wheels on my IH hay rake. I like it. What I don't like is Ace's "IH Red". It almost had a magenta hue. I really like Ace's "IH Blue" however...

OK, here is my 2 cents worth.
ACE Hardware Implement Blue.................Good, covers well and sprays on wet. Good match color wise
ACE Hardware School Bus Yellow..............Good enough color match. But does not cover (not recommended)
Valspar (The kind that TSC used to carry) Cub Cadet Yellow is a good enough match for yellow cub. Good quality paint.
MAJIC TSC paint ....No experience at all with color and quality
IH IronGuard is best for the correct offwhite cream color. Great quality paint.

***I cannot tell any difference in the shades of School Bus Yellow, Federal Safety Yellow and Cub Cadet Yellow
Plain old "Safety Yellow" is not even close to a cub yellow. Don't use it,

My Tractor Supply just started selling Rustoleum tractor paint. They have IH Red, didn't look at the other colors. If its anything like thier other paints I would be happy to switch to that. I'm sick of that thin, runny Majic crap.

Majics color is good, I just repainted my Super As hood, but its just a pain to prepare. It stays tacky for up to 24 hours and if anything like dirt or dust sticks to it, you're screwed.

Hi,
You could ask the man that painted the Cub what colors and brands of yellow and white he used, maybe he has cans he can show you, if he kept them. Or if he is far away, call him on the phone. Then buy more like he used on it. :)

I'd echo the Ace brand Rust-Stop Implement paint (International Blue and Almond Gloss); big 15 oz cans and adjustable spray nozzle. Valspar is good paint as well. When TSC stopped selling it, another locally owned farm store picked up the line. I'd stay away from any Majic brand.

By the way, there were several shades of off-white (aka, cream) that IH used over the years.

The TSC Majic paint is GARBAGE. It never dries according to everyone I know who has used it. Always remains gummy/tacky.

The Ace IH red is good paint, but the color dries out to a dull maroon. Their IH red in a quart can comes out very similar to CaseIH 2150 red.
