Quick question: going through my '62 cub: is the PTO supposed to have a seal around the PTO shaft? I greased the zerk and grease oozed out all around the PTO shaft. I'm thinking it's supposed to have one? If so, do you have a recommended seal recommendation?

Re: PTO Seal?
As I understand it, the grease zerk is there for lubrication when the tractor is stationary and operating an implement such as a hammer mill, buzz saw, etc. For normal pto use such as running a mower, etc., it receives it's lubrication from the gear oil in the transmission. That zerk is probably one of the most overlubed on the tractor and contributes to globs of grease in the gear oil and leakage from the seal.

Re: PTO Seal?
Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub owner's manual telling about greasing the Cub. It says grease the PTO bearing using the grease fitting every 150 hours. It doesn't say anything about if the tractor is stationary. The info is at the bottom of the page.
The bearing has a shield on the front side, so I don't think oil from the gears would get in to where the bearing is. If you don't grease it with the fitting, the bearing would get dry eventually. My opinion, after removing them and rebuilding them in the past.
Below that is a page from the Cub service manual showing pics of the PTO assembly, the bearing shield, and the seal in the lower pic.

Re: PTO Seal?
I just replaced the PTO bearing on my '48 Cub. From looking at the PTO housing, bearing shield toward the transmission, grease fitting, etc; I believe the design was for the bearing to be only lubed with grease. There really isn't much of a path for transmission gear oil to lube the bearing. To avoid loading the transmission with excess grease, I greased the new bearing before installing the PTO assembly in the tractor. I pumped grease in until I just saw it coming out between the shaft and the bearing shield. This takes a lot of grease because you are filling the empty cavity and packing the bearing. I now know where I am at (cavity packed full of grease) and will grease the bearing periodically with just a couple of pumps of the grease gun (3 at the most). I know the bearing is getting grease and any more will just spill out into the transmission since the cavity is full.
