Newly Purchased 1949 Farmall Cub

Postby denniswimer » Mon Jul 04, 2016 12:22 pm

First, hello to the group!

My wife and I recently purchased a 'retirement' home in Osceola, Missouri with around 7 acres of property. When we first moved in, we purchased a 54" Lawn Tractor, believing we could mow our property with this small lawn tractor. It did not take long for us to realize this was a bit unrealistic, even though the capacity of the lawn tractor said it could handle the acreage. But, with all the tree branches filling up the acreage, it became unmanageable.

As a result of this daunting task, we started our search for a small tractor, with a brush-hog attachment that could handle the additional acreage we were having issues with mowing with our little lawn tractor. We search farming magazine, followed auction papers in the local community and talked with local residents to find something reasonably priced that would do what we wanted.

Finally, we found a source that was willing to sell us a small IH Farmall Cub tractor, with a middle attached, underneath mower. The owner thought this was a 1948, but, after purchase, we searched the serial number online and discovered it was actually a 1949.

Now begins a bit of restoration to get everything back into working shape. The belts are new and the tires are new. In the coming weeks, we will be locating owner and operator manuals for this jewel and learning a bit more about this antique tractor that is actually older than we are :) so, we will be posting more and more to the forums here, in an attempt to become 'experts' with this tractor and all we can do with it. Personally, I have not been in a farming community in many, many years, as my job is actually in the technology industries. But, we are dedicated to becoming retired and learning how to manage our little piece of a small, rural community.

Welcome to the forum. Do a little searching in the "PDF Manuals" link above and you will find Operators, Service and Parts Manuals for your Cub and probably mower. They're free and you can copy and/or print them.

Dennis, Welcome to the Forum. Let us know if we can be of any help. If you don't want to download manuals you can purchase them from TM Tractor (forum sponsor at the bottom of the page), or Binderbooks.com who also carries lots of implement manuals (also available for download here).

Post some photos of your Cub and mower. We can help you identify your mower, if there is a question.

Attached images of tractor and mower attachment.

I am not certain about model for mower attachment, but believe this may be a Woods attachment.

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

I believe it cold be a standard IH C-2made by Danco, but with the top pulley mounted upside down? Not sure you can do that, mine is not close at hand, but I've seen some rather ingenious Previous Owner "fixes".
