Tachometer opinion

Looking to add a tach/hour meter to my Cub. Saw these units on eBay and thought I'd ask y'all's opinion of the units.

Most all of those tachs are from India. I can't comment on the quality. In addition, you'll need the mounting brackets, cable, drive gear and a distributor that is configured for a tach and has a cover plate over the mounting hole. You'll have to decide whether the info you get from a tach is worth the cost or not. I'm sure others may differing opinions.

Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub parts book showing the parts of the IH tachometer, if you want to see it. :)

In all likelihood, the Cub tachometers are all made in one factory in China or India so it won't matter who you buy from as far as quality. What might matter is service after the sale. With many of these places you will be lucky to get in contact with someone should you have an issue, let alone get any satisfaction from them. The advantage is that ebay can intervene and give your money back.

I just added a tachometer to my '53 Cub, not because I really needed it but because I had one and I liked it. The tach is a 343 hour original that was pulled from another Cub that I recently purchased. My Cub didn't have a distributor drive housing that would accommodate the tachometer drive. Tim (tst) provided a good distributor drive housing that would, at a fair price. It was an easy exchange to swap housings. I got a new tachometer drive cable from Steiner's and it all hooked up and works like a champ. The only real advantage of having a tachometer, in my view is the hour meter for keeping track of service intervals. Okay, it's kind of cool too.... 8)

Hi,
Here is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing a tachometer, might not be able to tell where it mounts though. It is on the right end of the special bolt that holds the throttle on the post. The bracket goes under the nut with the cap, which is what was originally there on every Cub I've seen. :)

Think I'm going to have to get one. Besides the gauge what else does a person need?
