Tractor not starting issue revisited

Postby ShawnAgne » Fri Jul 08, 2016 2:17 pm

After my previous post where the tractor would not start after it was warm I pulled the power switch and I got current, however it would not crank. When I push the starter the current on the ammeter goes to zero. I replaced the wire from the coil to the distributor (looked badly frayed) and it still doesn't turn over. My next thought was to pull the switch off the starter and clean off the leads on it.

However is the problem still likely the coil? I haven't had time to pull it off and test it yet and won't till Monday as I have a rifle match this weekend.

Opinions welcome, thanks in advance.

1) Ignition coil problems will not keep the engine from cranking over.
2) Polish up the battery and all cable terminals, ends.
3) Fully charge up the battery. Then either have the battery tested or conduct the voltage drop tests.
4) After you get the engine running, see if you have charging voltage at the battery.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Battery is fully charged and new. Previous batter got ran dead and then wouldn't charge (bad cell). Voltage drop is 6.35V

Doesn't mean that the "new" battery has sufficient amperage to crank over the starter.
Voltage drop is 6.35V
That's the voltage of a fully charged battery, not a voltage drop.

Internet search for voltage drop tests. Simple tests which will locate the problem area.

Ends up problem "I think" was much simpler. Battery when it was just newly installed before the non-restart issue was fully charged. I pulled the starter off and took off the housing which holds the copper connectors polished them up, along with the terminals and it works again. However still wondering about the coil, so going to finish mowing the yard and then shut it off and try the restart, this time when its back in the garage with the deck down.

Thanks for all the help/advice.
