Carb air mixture screw question

Postby CapeCodCubs » Fri Jul 15, 2016 3:21 pm

The adjustment screw on the carb is for the air mixture, right? All the way in is for a rich mix? With warm weather and for a working cub isn't the best setting all the way in and then back it out 2 1/2 turns? I can not remember and can not find anything about this.

Also how important is it to have a new gasket between the manifold and carb? I probably need a new one, what gasket sealer might get me by over the weekend until TM send me some new parts and gaskets?

Also is there anyone making or selling the straightening block for the top half, I have a few that are warped?

If you have an air leak between the carb and manifold, the cub will run lean, if at all. Spray carb cleaner at the gasket area, if the engine revs, you have a leak.
Not sure what the screw should be set at, I adjust by ear.

May be to late since it's Friday afternoon.

I keep sheets of different thickness gasket material on hand. Cutting most gaskets is easy and less expensive than ordering individual gaskets from the auto parts store or on the internet. Heck, most of the time the shipping cost is more than the gasket.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thank you Ed. I took apart the carb I had on it to clean in the parts cleaner at work and someone picked it up and snapped the idle tube off (idiot) so I put an unknown carb on and the tractor runs for about 30 seconds and then quits. I suppose I need to open it up and check it out.

What are the float settings I can't seem to find that either. Will keep looking tonight in the manuals, but if someone knows.

Also their seem to be two versions of the IH carb, according to one manual I found. How can you tell which is which?

I back mine out 1 1/2 turns and then fine tune from there. The setting on my carburetor is 1 13/32" from top of carburetor flange to bottom of float.

hope this helps,
Stan

Chris if you have calipers, the float height is 1.4" and the drop is 1.6", both without the gasket.

Bob,
I had it written down before when you helped me at Cecil's but could find it out in the shop. I figured you would chime in. Do you have the layout for the de warping block? I would like to make one.

Thanks

Chris, There are several "how to's" on making the jig. Farmertan (Mike Davis) in Oklahoma also makes some nice ones. I don't know if anyone else is or not.

Hi,
The idle mixture screw on top of the IH carb needs to be open the approximately 1 and 1/2 turns. It won't run if the screw is turned too far in.
I think I have read on here that on a few IH Cub carbs it didn't matter if the screw was open or closed, the engine still ran. I think the men replied that something is wrong with the carb, if the screw adjustment makes no difference in how the engine runs.
Here is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing how to adjust the idle screw. It needs to be open more than one turn, probably, but they do not all work exactly the same. :)
