How do you remove the valve guides to replace them?
Ok. I've removed the valves, Springs, and keepers. Now I'm trying to get the valve guides out so I can replace them with new ones. Question is how do you get them out?

Short answer. Old valve guides are pressed out and new guides pressed in.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub parts book. The valve guides are number 7 in the pic.
Like Eugene said, pressing them out at a shop is probably the easy way, but you have to remove the engine and have it at the shop first.
There was a post some time back about someone replacing them without removing the engine, not sure how he did it.

guides can be driven out easily, they need to be pressed back in carefully

Service manual, page 1-21, has a picture of valve guide installation measurement.
The measurement is 1 3/32" from top of block to valve guide center line. You should take a look at the parts manual to see how the measurement is taken.

I was able to get them out using a 5/16 grade 8 bolt with large washers on top and a nut under the guide. Tightened the nut and bolt which pulled them up and out. Now we'll see if I can get the new ones in.

Re: How do you remove the valve guides to replace them?
Has anyone tried putting the guides in a cooler with dry ice prior to inserting them?
It is about 100 degrees F colder than a typical home freezer. I have been thinking about trying this just wondering if anyone has tried it.

I've been told that dry ice works well. I plan on getting some and trying it when I reinstall the new ones. I'll let you know how it works

Here are pictures of a simple tool I made to pull the guides.

Re: How do you remove the valve guides to replace them?
I've got a question about installing the guides. The service manual is clear about the depth from the surface of the block to the center of the guide -- measured vertically from the block -- should be 1 3/32". My old guides measure 15/16" very consistently. Could they simply have been installed incorrectly? Here is a picture of what the old guides look like installed.
They clearly did not get pressed down any where near the bottom of the guide cavity. They are at least 1/8" proud of the the bottom of the cavity. It seem like if I press the new guides in to 1 3/32" the top of the guide will be very near the bottom of the guide cavity. Is this correct?
