cub wont start or keep running
Happening again , too often ! 52 CUB starts, may run a minute and stop, immediately. Will start if pull it about 25 or 50 feet and usually run about half hour and shut off again. I cleaned the glass gas strainer under gas tank and checked gas flow to carb. and it does'nt act like the coil when it goes bad. What should I look at ?

Re: cub wont start or keep running
Check for spark when the tractor won't start.
What type of ignition system? Battery, magneto, or modified magneto with external coil.
When was the last complete engine tune up?
Pull starting the tractor indicates a couple of things. Magneto ignition, impulse coupling faulty. Battery ignition system, ignition timing is off. Weak compression, but that will be disclosed during the full engine tune up.
And you could have a faulty ignition coil.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Gas flow to carb: did you remove the drain on the carb and allow about a quart or more to flow into a container? Was it full stream with no slow down in the volume? If it slows down after initial flow, you have a restriction in the fuel delivery somewhere back to the tank. Could be carb float, debris in the strainer in the carb inlet/line/strainer screen in the shutoff valve/tank, inline strainer/filter, bad fuel line if not metal, etc. Stan

52 Cub has battery ignition and coil is about 2 yrs, old, Sorry to say, don't know what "ignition timing" exactly is. And I will do another gas drain and let more drain out this time as only let out about cup before. Will welcome any other thoughts and suggestions.

Whole bunch of how to's on this site and videos on the internet.HART wrote:Sorry to say, don't know what "ignition timing" exactly is.
Tractor runs for about 30 minutes when started. Not a fuel flow problem. And I will do another gas drain and let more drain out this time as only let out about cup before.

Check fuel tank cap vent is not plugged. Check for "floater" in the tank that might be getting over the outlet.

Re: cub wont start or keep running
Hi,
Ignition timing is when the ignition system fires and sends a spark to a spark plug, in relation to where the crankshaft and pistons are turned. It has to be set right for the engine to run good.
It has to be set with an automotive timing light.
Here is a page from the Cub service manual showing the ignition timing marks.
A 1952 Cub probably has 1 timing mark on the front pulley, they started using 2 marks like in the manual in the mid 1950's I think.
If you have 1 mark, you would align it with the pointer, at low idle speed, if it's a Battery Ignition Unit.
The 2nd and 3rd pages are from a Cub owner's manual, and show the magneto and Battery Ignition Unit, so you can identify which one you have. They also show how to replace the points. The 2 point contact surfaces have to be good, flat, clean and shiny metal. Burned points can make it start hard.
