Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they were galvanized. Many people paint them a silver but the previous owner painted mine IH white and I've seen some red. What ever looks good to you is what they should be.

Re: Rear Wheel Paint Color
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I second the Rustoleum Hammered silver...looks like galvanized. I just finished these for the 1957 Lowboy.

Ken, is the hammered paint in a spray can only or can it be brushed?

Re: Rear Wheel Paint Color
I but it in a spray can at Lowes...I would assume that something in the spray creates the "hammered" look and would not work with a brush but not sure.

I tried it with a brush, but did not like the results.

Re: Rear Wheel Paint Color
I'm not sure about the Rustoleum brand, but the Hammerite brand is available in brush on cans. It works just as well as the spray can. Our Ace hardware carries both brands. Yes, it's an excellent rim paint.
