Well when I bought the 57 Lowboy home the front axle was widened out a couple of holes. I decided that I didn't need this extra width so after a month of spraying Kroll, one side moved a little. I removed the axle from the tractor so I could get it in a vertical position and "persuade" it some with the BFH I was not trying to get it apart but just narrowed down to the first hole...not happening. Left side would only move about 1/4 inch and that's it. Now I know what your thinking, bet he wishes he had left it alone. Yes Sir, but that's just not my style. Here is what I came up with. Walked it right out. You have to have jacks on both sides to keep it from binding. It can be done.
That Kroll is amazing!

Re: Adjustable front axle...Update
I was going to use the dowel and sandpaper trick as posted by a forum member but I found a new way to clean out the axle tube that worked very well. I had an old, VERY worn cup brush from the restore of the 48. It fit tightly into the tube with a little persuasion. I used a piece of 5/8 all-thread and a nut to hold it tight. I had to grind down the end of the all-thread so it would fit into my 1/2 drill. Sprayed some Kroll and went to work. I love it when an idea works in practice as well as it sounds in my head Plus I had all of the parts lying around the garage too, nothing to buy.
Wired brushed the extensions and slathered them up with anti-seize and it slid back together with a gentle tap.

Re: Adjustable front axle...
I had the same idea a few years ago when I rebuilt the front axle on our '49. I didn't use as big of a brush but it did work, I used what I had, a 2" brush. You have to get pretty rowdy with the drill and it does work/help!
